Updated September 25, 2006 Upon Further Review Just as the Giants would like a chance to change the result of their game in Seattle, Jeremy Shockey would like a do-over for the controversial comments he made in the post-game locker room.
The Pro Bowl tight end created a furor soon after the Giants’ 42-30 loss to the Seahawks Sunday in Qwest Field when he said, “We got outplayed and out-coached. Write that one down.” Shockey was clearly frustrated following a game in which the Giants trailed entering the final period, 42-3.
After a long flight home, a team meeting and a private sit-down with Tom Coughin, Shockey was contrite today.
“First and foremost, I’d like to say I’m a team person,” Shockey told a group of perhaps 30 reporters crowded around his locker. “I’m very team-oriented and what I said was not a team thing to say. I do let my emotions get to me at times. That’s just the competitive nature in me. I don’t like to lose – I don’t like to lose at anything. … I’m a very hard person on myself and everybody in this locker room is hard on themselves as well.
“The most important thing here is that we have a couple of weeks off so everybody can get healthy. It’s very important for us to get better in these next two weeks. We have a division game (against Washington at home on Oct. 8). Our number one goal as a team is winning the division. I didn’t mean to bring distractions, because I know it occurred. Again, I am a team person. My competitive nature and persona got the best of me there.”
Coughlin acknowledged that he did speak with Shockey, but initially revealed little else.
“Shockey and I talked,” Coughlin said. “Jeremy and I talked and what we did discuss and what we decided will remain private.”
Asked if the issue was resolved to his satisfaction, Coughlin said, “That will remain private.” Pressed whether he could say if Shockey apologized, the coach said, “No, I’m not going to say anything. That’s between the player and I.” More
