Yesterday’s dominant performance in a 19-3 home victory over the Washington Redskins was just what the doctor ordered for the Giants. It was their first game after the ugly loss in Seattle two weeks ago and it came after a bye in which the Giants stressed fundamentals and playing the game correctly. Then they went out and rushed for 155 yards, kept the Redskins out of the end zone and held their opponents to 164 yards and did not turn the ball over.
“We worked hard for this and there’s a formula for this,” coach Tom Coughlin said today. “We have to stay within that formula, preparation being the key.”
The Giants can’t yet exhale, because they continue their journey through the NFL’s most difficult schedule. The four teams the Giants have faced (Indianapolis, Philadelphia, Seattle and Washington) are a combined 14-5. This week, the Giants travel to Atlanta to play the 3-1 Falcons, who are coming off their bye, and follow that with a trip to Dallas for a Monday night game against the Cowboys (2-2 with a game against Houston on Sunday).
“I don’t know how we drew this schedule – it’s probably the toughest schedule I’ve ever played starting out,” defensive end Michael Strahan said. “At the same time, it is what it is. You have to look at it as if you’re not chopped liver, either, when somebody looks at their schedule to play you. You have to look at it as if you’re able to beat everybody, because you’re that caliber of a team. I think that’s the way we are. We need to think that way, that no matter who we play, we should win. I really believe that.”
“We can’t relax now,” quarterback Eli Manning said. “We can’t say, 'Well, we played one good game, we’ve got it figured out now.' You never have anything figured out. You’ve got to go from week to week and study and have a great plan for Atlanta and have a great practice - getting everybody back out to practice Wednesday, be full speed and work on getting better.
