2006 Game Summaries

Week 17: Giants Over Redskins, 34-28
Tiki Barber proved he wants to keep playing football by saving his best for what could have been his last game.

The Giants’ great running back all but assured his retirement will have to wait another week by playing his final game of the season, rushing for a career highs of 234 yards (a franchise record) and three touchdowns – including 50 and 55 yarders - as the Giants defeated the Washington Redskins Saturday night in FedEx Field, 34-28.

Week 16: Giants Fall to Saints, 30-7
The Giants’ playoff quest isn’t dead yet, but it is certainly on life support.

Instead of taking advantage of an opportunity to advance in the NFC postseason race, the Giants today played poorly across the board and lost to the New Orleans Saints, 30-7, in Giants Stadium. The 23-point margin of defeat was the Giants’ largest in a home game since a 50-21 loss to Washington on Sept. 19, 1999.

Week 15: Giants Fall to Eagles, 36-22
When the Giants won the NFC East title last season, they did so on the strength of a 7-1 home record. This year, they are scrambling to make the playoffs as a wild card entry largely because they have no home field advantage. On Sunday, the Giants lost their third consecutive home game and fell to 3-4 in Giants Stadium with a 36-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Week 14: Giants Over Panthers, 27-13
The Giants reversed course today and got back on track toward securing an NFC postseason berth.

They ended a four-game losing streak with an impressive 27-13 victory over the Carolina Panthers in Bank of America Stadium. The Giants improved to 7-6 and bolstered their quest for a Wild Card playoff berth – and perhaps an NFC East title if Dallas falters. In beating Carolina for the first time, they also enjoyed a measure of revenge in defeating the team that eliminated them from last year’s playoffs.

Week 13: Giants Fall to Cowboys, 23-20

The Giants are in a fight for their playoff lives.

Although they tied the score three times after falling behind, the Giants surrendered big plays in the final minute of the game and lost today to the Dallas Cowboys in Giants Stadium, 23-20.

The Giants lost their fourth consecutive game and fell to 6-6, two games behind the 8-4 Cowboys in the NFC East race.

Week 12: Giants Fall to Titans, 24-21
“We will be sick about this one forever.”

Thus was Tom Coughlin’s final summation of one of the most unfathomable and excruciating defeats in the Giants’ 82-year history. Leading 21-0 early in the fourth quarter, they surrendered 24 unanswered points and lost to the Tennessee Titans Sunday in LP Field, 24-21.

Eli Manning was twice intercepted by Pacman Jones in the quarter and the second pick set up Rob Bironas’ game-winning 49-yard field goal with six seconds remaining.

Week 11: Giants Fall to Jaguars, 26-10

Shaun O’Hara was trying to summarize the Giants’ appearance on Monday Night Football when he realized the task was as discouraging as the game he had just played.

“There aren’t enough words in the dictionary to describe how bad it was today and how we played,” O’Hara said. “As professionals, it’s inexcusable. It can’t happen. We should all turn our paychecks back in.”

A little harsh, perhaps, but this was a stinker by the Giants. They find themselves in a dead heat atop the NFC East after sputtering on offense for most of the night and falling to the Jacksonville Jaguars, 26-10, in Alltel Stadium.

Week 10: Giants Fall to Bears, 38-20

The showdown atop the NFC became a lowdown for the Giants.

Poised to take over the top spot in the conference playoff race, the Giants squandered a 10-point first-half lead in Giants Stadium Sunday night and lost to the Chicago Bears, 38-20. The defeat ended their winning streak at five games and greatly diminished their chances of earning the top seed in the NFC Playoffs. The Giants fell to 6-3, two games behind the 8-1 Bears, who now hold the tiebreaker advantage.

Week 9: Giants Over Texans, 14-10

The Giants needed a spark, a jolt, something to shake off their offensive doldrums and the prospect of a costly and surprising defeat.

So Tom Coughlin decided to rev up the offensive engine. Trailing Houston early in the fourth quarter, Coughlin turned to his no-huddle offense. The Giants promptly drove 67 yards in 11 plays, the last a three-yard touchdown pass from Eli Manning to Jeremy Shockey with 7:49 remaining in the game that gave the Giants a hard-fought 14-10 victory over the Texans in Giants Stadium.

Week 8: Giants Over Buccaneers, 17-3

The winning team punted nine times. So did the losing team, which never got within 20 yards of the end zone. The teams combined to average 3.1 yards a carry and complete 46 percent of their passes. The dominant elements in the game were defense and wind.

Not that the Giants were complaining. With their defense suffocating the Tampa Bay offense – despite the absence of three starters - the Giants earned a 17-3 victory over the Buccaneers in breezy Giants Stadium.

Week 7: Giants Over Cowboys, 36-22

Antonio Pierce put his own spin on a quintessential Texas quote to punctuate a big Giants victory in the Lone Star State.

“I’ve got to say what they say – ‘How ’bout them Giants?’” Pierce roared late Monday night. How ‘bout them indeed? The Giants crushed the Dallas Cowboys Monday night in Texas Stadium, 36-22, to take over sole possession of first place in the NFC East. Their 1-2 start now a distant memory, the Giants have won three consecutive games to improve to 4-2 – with home games on tap the next three weeks, beginning Sunday against Tampa Bay.

The Giants are 3-0 in the division for the first time since 1997 and 3-1 on the road. And they dropped the Cowboys to 3-3 as Dallas prepares to hit the road for three straight weeks.

Week 6: Giants Over Falcons, 27-14

Even in a domed stadium, the sky seemed to be falling on the Giants on Sunday.

Two of their first four possessions ended with Eli Manning throwing an interception. They trailed at halftime by four points and early in the third quarter by 11, after giving up the longest touchdown run they’ve ever allowed.

But no one does second halves like the Giants. They scored 24 unanswered points to defeat the Atlanta Falcons, 27-14.

Week 5: Giants Over Redskins, 19-3
Throughout their bye week, the Giants talked about going back to basics and shoring up their fundamentals to correct the mistakes and shortcomings that had been exposed in their first three games. Today they followed their plan perfectly, using a strong running game and rock-solid defense to dominate the Washington Redskins in a 19-3 victory in Giants Stadium.

“We played Giants football,” head Coach Tom Coughlin said. WR Amani Toomer came up with several big plays during the Giants 19-3 win over the Redskins Sunday.

That enabled them to even their record at 2-2 as they prepare for road games in Atlanta and Dallas the next two weeks. The Giants are 2-0 in the NFC East for the first time since 2000. Washington, which had won its previous two games, slipped to 2-3. More

Week 3: Giants Fall to Seattle, 42-30
Ten months after suffering a heartbreaking overtime defeat at Qwest Field, the Giants on Sunday absorbed a vastly different kind of loss. And this one might have been more painful than last year’s version.

How different was it? Well, the Giants outscored the Seahawks in the fourth quarter, 27-0. But because they were 39 points behind when the period began, that scoring binge did no more than bring them within two touchdowns of their opponents. Seattle cruised to leads of 35-0 and 42-3 before holding off the Giants, 42-30.

The Giants committed four turnovers in a first half that ended with them on the wrong end of a 35-3 score, the largest halftime deficit in the 82-year history of the franchise. More

Week 2: Giants Over Eagles in OT, 30-24
Leave it to Tom Coughlin to understate one of the most incredible games the Giants have ever played. “This one will be something that we’ll remember,” Coughlin said Sunday after his team rallied from a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles, 30-24, in overtime at Lincoln Financial Field. Actually, the always-in-control coach was as excited as everyone else. It was impossible not to be after the stirring game that included multiple heroic individual performances.

The Giants tied the game on Jay Feely’s 35-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining, then won it when Eli Manning lofted a 31-yard touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress with 3:11 left in the extra period. The Giants, who were a quarter away from falling into an 0-2 hole, are 1-1 and tied for the NFC East lead as they head to Seattle next week for a meeting with the defending NFC champion Seahawks. Week 1: Giants Fall to Colts, 26-21
The big buildup resulted in a big letdown for the Giants.

After weeks of enormous hype resulting from the presence of Eli and Peyton Manning as the first pair of brothers to start the same game in NFL history, the Giants will remember the night only in disappointment. After falling behind by 13 points early, the Giants rallied but fell short, losing their season-opening game to the Indianapolis Colts, 26-21, in Giants Stadium Sunday night. More...

Quote of the Week
"They were both very productive guys that both played at a high level of football so that right there we think means a lot. Just in the few days we have had a chance to work with them they are pretty much every bit what we thought they were. We will keep working them and hopefully get two good players out of them." - DC Steve Spagnuolo S Kenny Phillips and CB Terrell Thomas
