Keys to Victory

1. Eleven to the ball. Reigning NFL MVP Adrian Peterson comes to MetLife Stadium for the first time to face the Giants. One tackler usually isn’t enough to stop him from getting to the next level.

2. Win the turnover battle. The turnover problem is well-documented on the offensive side of the ball for the Giants, but the defense’s lack of takeaways has also led to an NFL-worst minus-16 differential. The defense is 14th in the NFC with seven forced turnovers.

3. Run on early downs.  The Giants saw what establishing the run can do last Thursday in Chicago as they were able to find a balance on offense and put together their most complete game of the year.

4. Get home. Bring extra pressure early and force the Vikings to show they can throw the ball. Even though he is a veteran, starting quarterback Josh Freeman has been with his new team for just two weeks.

5. Get off the field on third down. New York opponents have converted on third down 48.9 percent of the time, which is third-worst in the NFL.

6. Catch the ball. The Giants need to stop hurting themselves before they can focus on beating their opponent. That includes dropped passes. The Giants are 29th in the NFL in dropping 11.3 percent of catchable passes.

7. Contain Patterson, not just Peterson.  While he still has room to grow as a wide receiver, rookie first-round draft pick Cordarrelle Patterson averages 33.8 yards per kickoff return, including a 105-yard touchdown in Week 2.

8. Force the arc in your favor.  Both teams have struggled this season, but they both pride themselves on their play at the line of scrimmage. It’s back to basics this week.

9. Protect Eli. Led by defensive end Jared Allen, whose 120.5 sacks are the most in the NFL since 2004, the Vikings are very active and athletic up front.

10. Execute. By now the Giants have turned over every stone and said everything there is to say. It’s time for someone to step up and make a play to propel the Giants to their first win of the season.
