NFL.com dubbed it “Saving the Best for Last.”
On Tuesday, the final installment of the seven-day process in Indianapolis, it was the defensive backs’ turn at the NFL Scouting Combine.
A year ago that group included
The cornerback earned a first-round selection from the Giants last year, and as he sheds the rookie label, took a look at his younger counterparts today.
While sitting in the cafeteria at the Timex Performance Center, Amukamara recalled the anxious times that NFL hopefuls experience.
“That was a bittersweet feeling,” he said of the combine. “That was great, but I dreaded it. But once you get through it, it’s definitely a relief. I know what those guys are going though, but there have been a lot of good performers already, which is great.”
Who was Amukamara anxious to see?
“I’m definitely going to keep an eye out for my Nebraska guy, Alfonzo Dennard,” he said. “I like the Morris Claiborne kid from LSU, looks good. And I’m excited about what Janoris Jenkins (North Alabama) does, too.”
After missing the first 10 weeks of his rookie season with a broken foot, Amukamara is determined this offseason to make his sophomore year a healthy and productive one.
“This is my first offseason, but all I know is to train,” Amukamara said. “So I’m going to do a lot of training just because of how much time I missed last year, and I still feel like I’m playing catch-up. So just a lot more training and a lot more film. And then I might take a trip here or there.”
Despite missing all the time, winning a Super Bowl as a rookie -- and all that came with it -- wasn’t a bad consolation.
“It’s been overwhelming. It’s been great,” he said. “Just going back home and just getting love from my family and friends, it’s great. Before that, the parade was a huge rush. So right now everything is settling down a little bit. I don’t know if we get to go see (President Barack) Obama, but I really hope we do. And when the ring ceremony comes, I think everything will come back up again.”
