Daily Blitz - Apr. 30: Teammates once again

Posted Apr 30, 2012

David Wilson and Jayron Hosley, two members of the Giants' 2012 draft class, were both teammates and roommates at Virginia Tech. Now they will enter the NFL together.

When was the last time you heard a good rabbit story?

Never? That’s all right. The Giants’ first- and third-round draft picks have you covered.

During a conference call on the final day of the draft, cornerback Jayron Hosley (Rd. 3, No. 94 overall) regaled the New York media with an anecdote involving running back David Wilson (Rd. 1 No. 32 overall), as the two former Hokies roomed together while playing at Virginia Tech.

As the story goes, a rabbit was spotted on campus in Blacksburg, Va. and Wilson, known for his quickness, was able to chase it down.

“He just wanted to see if he could touch it because you know the rabbit’s very quick,” Hosley recalled. “David’s a very quick guy as well, but he just touched it and that’s basically it.”

While it was the first time I heard about it, the New York Times picked it up this past January and published an article about Wilson. In the piece, Hokies coach Frank Beamer said he’s “never seen [Wilson] have a bad day.”

“The way he runs the football is kind of how his life is: full speed ahead, all effort,” Beamer added in the article.

Meanwhile, Hosley has his own athletic exploits. After leading the country in interceptions in 2010, ESPN produced a “Sports Science” on the cornerback in August before his final season at Virginia Tech. And this past weekend, general manager Jerry Reese went on to say he has “athletic arrogance.”

“You definitely have to go out there with confidence,” Hosley said when asked about Reese’s comments. “I’m not a bigger guy, so guys might see me as a little vulnerable or as “the little guy.” I definitely have to go out there with a little aggression, the little man’s syndrome in that sense. Definitely aggressive. I think coach knows me as a player and knows what I bring to the table. I think they’re happy with their decision; and both sides are.”
