Eisen's Mailbag: Linebackers

It’s been a while since the Giants have really had an impact linebacker – a position where they once had the best in the NFL, from Huff through Carson & Taylor. How important is addressing the issue of a playmaking linebacker – and do you believe getting one will help out both the pass rush and the secondary?

In my humble opinion I think it’s very important. I believe the Giants need some impact players at linebacker. Their best linebacker this season might have Chase Blackburn, who is a solid, productive player and he led the team in tackles, but I don’t know that he is a game-changer. As a group, the linebacker this season had 4.5 sacks (not counting Mathias Kiwanuka’s 3.0, because he played a lot on the defensive line), 3 forced fumbles and 3 fumble recoveries. Blackburn and Michael Boley were the only linebackers among the team’s top 11 tacklers. I think upgrading the linebacker corps will give the entire defense a big lift.
