Eli with another comeback win; Milestones

Posted Oct 21, 2012

Eli Manning notched another fourth quarter comeback with the Giants thrilling 27-23 win over the Skins

Notes and statistics from the Giants’ 27-23 victory over the Washington Redskins.

*The Giants won their third consecutive game, improved to 5-2 and remain in first place in the NFC East entering their game in Dallas next week.

*The Giants broke a two-game losing streak to Washington and improved to 1-2 in the NFC East this season and 3-5 in division home games in their three seasons in MetLife Stadium.

*The Giants scored the game-winning points on Eli Manning’s 77-yard touchdown pass to Victor Cruz with 1:13 remaining. It was the longest game-winning touchdown in the final two minutes of a fourth quarter in Giants history.

*It was the 21st regular-season game in which Manning has rallied the Giants from a fourth quarter deficit or tie to win – and the second this season. Manning led the Giants to a late victory over Tampa Bay on Sept. 16. The Giants trailed in the fourth quarter of that game, 27-16.

*The 77-yarder was the sixth-longest touchdown pass of Manning’s career. Cruz has caught three of the six, including the franchise-record 99-yarder vs. the Jets last season and an 80-yarder vs. Tampa Bay on Sept. 16. Cruz also has two 74-yard touchdown receptions and a 72-yarder.

*The Giants’ 329 net passing yards were their second-highest total of the season. They threw for a franchise-record 510 yards vs. the Buccaneers.

*After totaling 392 yards on the ground the previous two games, the Giants rushed for only 68 yards, their second-lowest total of the season; they ran for 577 yards at Philadelphia on Sept. 30.

*Washington gained 480 yards, the highest total by a Giants opponent since New Orleans finished with 57 yards on Nov. 28, 2011.

*The Redskins’ 248 rushing yards were the most by a Giants opponent since Dallas ran for 251 yards on Sept. 20, 2009.

*Washington punted just once, the fewest by a Giants opponent since Pittsburgh punted once on Dec. 18, 2004.

*The Giants had four takeaways (three fumble recoveries and an interception by Stevie Brown), their second-highest total of the season; they had five at Carolina on Sept. 20. The Giants have had at least three takeaways in each of their last three games, the first time they’ve done that since Oct. 19-Nov. 2, 2008, when they did it three games in row vs. San Francisco, Pittsburgh and Dallas.

*The Redskins scored the game’s first points on a 20-yard field goal by Kai Forbath that concluded a 17-play, 93-yard drive that took 9:11 to complete. It was the first regular-season drive of at least 17 plays against the Giants since Philadelphia had an 18-play series here on Nov. 20, 2011, the first drive of at least 93 yards since Dallas’ 94-yarder in the 2011 season finale, and the longest in terms of time by an opposing team since Arizona owned the ball for 9:20 on Oct. 2, 2011.

*The teams were tied at halftime, 13-13. It was the Giants’ first deadlock after two quarters since Nov. 6, 2011, when it was 0-0 at the half at New England. The Giants also won that game by four points, 24-20.

*Manning completed 26 of 40 passes for 337 yards, the touchdown to Cruz and two interceptions. It was his 25th regular-season 300-yard game. The Giants are 13-12 in those games. The 337 yards were Manning’s highest total vs. Washington and only his second 300-yard game vs. the Redskins (305 yards on Nov. 30, 2008).

*Manning was sacked once, with 4:52 remaining in the game. It was the first time he was sacked since 1:37 remained in the third quarter in the victory at Carolina on Sept 20. The Giants had not allowed a sack in three consecutive games and Manning had thrown 148 consecutive passes between sacks.

*Cruz had game-high totals of seven receptions for 131 yards. It was Cruz’s 10th regular-season 100-yard game. The Giants are 5-5 in those games.

*Hakeem Nicks caught five passes for 53 yards. That increased his career total to 224 and moved him past Steve Smith (220) and into 18th place on the franchise’s career list.

*Tight end Martellus Bennett had five receptions for a season-high 79 yards.

*Ahmad Bradshaw rushed for 43 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. His one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter was the 30th rushing touchdown of his career. He is the ninth player in Giants history with at least nine rushing touchdowns.

*The Giants had three sacks of Washington rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III. Defensive ends Justin Tuck, Jason Pierre-Paul and Osi Umenyiora had one apiece. It was Tuck’s first sack of the season, Umenyiora’s third and Pierre-Paul increased his total to a team-high 4.5. Pierre-Paul has 6.0 sacks in five career games vs. the Redskins.

*Brown’s interception was his third of the season, tying Michael Boley for the team lead.

*The Giants’ inactive players were defensive tackle Rocky Bernard (quadriceps), safety Kenny Phillips (knee), linebacker Jacquian Williams (knee), wide receiver Jerrel Jernigan, tight end Adrien Robinson, offensive lineman James Brewer and defensive end Adewale Ojomo.

*The game captains were Antrel Rolle and Chris Snee.
