Experts grade Giants' 2013 Draft Picks

Posted Apr 30, 2013

NFL Draft Experts give their take on the Giants seven 2013 Draft selections

With GM Jerry Reese, the Giants tend to draft for beyond the current year, but they ended up with three strong, athletic linemen who can make an immediate impact. Syracuse first-rounder Justin Pugh is too smooth not to win a job at guard or tackle in '13. Defensively, they got a needed run-stuffing tackle (Ohio State's Johnathan Hankins) and pass-rushing end to help replace Osi Umenyiora (Texas A&M's Damontre Moore). Also watch out for Richmond's Cooper Taylor, a big linebacker-like safety with the speed to develop into a big playmaker.

They took G/T Justin Pugh higher than I expected him to go, though he might pan out to be worthy of that spot. DT Johnathan Hankins and DE Damontre Moore both were typical Giants picks and should pitch in on defense. The trade up for QB Ryan Nassib was a classic Giants value pick, too — though, if Eli Manning sticks around for a few years, Nassib will either sit on the sideline or be traded. Lots of upside here. We’ll have to see how much immediate impact the Giants get.

Jen Floyd Engel: (A)

Alex Marvez: (C) They have a good history of drafting offensive and defensive lineman, but Syracuse tackle/guard Justin Pugh at No. 19 feels like a reach. Texas A&M’s Damontre Moore had first-round potential but slipped to the third after some awful pre-draft workouts.

Peter Schrager: (B) They stuck to their board and got quality players on the offensive and defensive lines. It’s what Jerry Reese does. Damontre Moore, the third-round selection, is the most intriguing. He’s a sack master who struggled in workouts. I’m shocked they didn’t draft a cornerback on Days 1 or 2, though. That’s an area of need.

Needs: C | Value: B | Overall: C

Summary: I had linebacker as a big need for them, but the Giants haven't drafted a linebacker in Round 1 since Carl Banks … in 1984. No surprise they didn't take one, but I'm pretty surprised they didn't take one at all. Justin Pugh is a pretty good player, and will start at guard. From there, the Giants fell in love with value over need in Rounds 2 in 3. In Round 2 they got Johnathan Hankins, at one time a likely Round 1 pick. Hankins runs hot and cold, but is a pretty good depth addition on the D-line. Then they got Damontre Moore, who had one of the biggest falls of the evaluation process we've seen in a few years. He had a great year, but tested out very poorly. They needed a defensive end and Moore could end up a steal. Where I question this draft is I'm pretty surprised they didn't get a corner or a linebacker. I really like Cooper Taylor, and you get a nice backup commodity in Ryan Nassib, I just hope they hold up at linebacker and on the edges. But these are smart evaluators and good coaches.

Grade: B-

Analysis: The pick of Pugh in the first round was a bit high, I thought. One pick that could make this draft is third-round defensive end Damontre Moore. He was once thought of as a potential first-round pick. The Giants do know defensive ends.

General manager Jerry Reese is one of the league's best evaluators of talent and has unearthed diamonds in the rough from all corners of the country. But in 2013, the most buzz-worthy prospects whom he selected were relatively local products from Syracuse -- offensive lineman Justin Pugh and quarterback Ryan Nassib. Pugh, 6-5, 307 pounds, has the height to play left tackle but lacks ideal arm length, which could push him inside to guard. The Giants have depth concerns throughout the offensive line and might see Pugh as a moveable chess piece. Nassib's fall could prove to be the Giants' gain. While Eli Manning's job is certainly safe, Nassib possesses the ideal toughness and professionalism to serve as a backup quarterback. The highly competitive Nassib will prepare for each game in case he's called into action at a moment's notice -- which not all prospective backup quarterbacks necessarily do. Of the Giants' other selections, I love the upside that they gambled on throughout the second and third days. The Giants love to re-stock their defensive line, and they certainly have two athletes in 6-3, 320-pound defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins and hybrid defensive end Damontre Moore who could do it. Each has the tools to be a standout but struggled at times with dedication. Head coach Tom Coughlin is old school, so this could be an interesting combination.
