Posted Apr 26, 2013

NFL Draft Experts give their take on the Giants selections of Johnathan Hankins and Damontre Moore

Read rapid reactions on the Giants’ second-round selection of defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins out of Ohio State. Let us know your grade of the draft so far in the comments section below.

Pete Prisco, CBSSports.com

I think Hankins has first-round talent. He's a productive player from a big program and fills a need. I like it. (A-)

The defensive lineman brings beef to the Giants, but has been criticized for lack of stamina. A great needs-based pick for a once proud defensive line that in 2012 ranked No. 22 on the Cold, Hard Football Facts Defensive Hog Index and No. 28 in rush yards per attempt allowed. These were not Michael Strahan's Giants in 2012.

The Giants get their defensive line help, only it's a tackle with the burst to disrupt the offensive backfield. Hankins will need to be more consistent to meet the high standards of the Giants' front-four rotation.

PROJECTED IMPACT: Hankins may have to sit and learn this season behind veterans like Joseph, Jenkins and Patterson. With a good showing in training camp, Hankins could potentially push Patterson, Rogers and Austin to see snaps in the Giants’ rotation and see some time on running plays with his big body. Perhaps he will see goal line snaps as well.

Analysis: Hankins is an enormous man (sometimes too large) who should be a run stuffer when the Giants aren't in their pass-rushing NASCAR package. The Giants are always true to their board, but it's worth wondering how much a player like Hankins will see the field vs. a trio of NFC East teams that tend to spread the field and/or favor option-oriented schemes. If the Eagles really manage to get a play off every 12 seconds, Hankins doesn't seem like the ideal defender to combat a fast break attack of that ilk.

With the 81st overall selection, the Giants drafted defensive end Damontre Moore out of Texas A&M in the third round. Read all the analysis on the pick and let us know your draft grades for Day 2.

Evan Hilbert, CBSSports.com

Though he was considered a possible late first-round draft pick possibility, the Giants selected former Texas A&M defensive end Damontre Moore with the 19th pick in the third round (No. 81 overall) in the NFL Draft.

Moore knows what a successful NFL linebacker looks like, having played behind current Broncos star Von Miller while with the Aggies. Though he's listed as a defensive end, Moore can also play linebacker.

Still, Moore was a star at defensive end in 2012 after A&M transitioned to a 4-3 defense, compiling 12.5 sacks and 20 tackles for loss.

Moore is a good athlete that has a very good first step off the snap and the agility to break down and change directions effectively in space. He has a solid build should be able to pack on additional the weight required of his position. He shows the ability to rush from a variety of spots and can string together several different moves when he is aggressive with his hands. He has excellent read and react skills, as he is able to quickly diagnose plays correctly and beat blockers to the POA.

The Giants moved on from Osi Umenyiora, and not too long ago, Moore was seen as a high first-round talent. They'll hope his work ethic and energy comes to life to overcome speed concerns. Moore will be helped by being part of a good rotation and pass-rushing system.

Nate Davis, USA TODAY Sports

Analysis: The Giants end the free fall of a guy once touted as a potential top-five pick. Moore flopped at the combine and apparently never recovered afterward. But he'll have an opportunity to claim Osi Umenyiora's nickel rusher role in New York and might eventually develop into the player many think he can be in the NFL.
