Fact or Fiction: Will FA moves affect Draft?

Posted Mar 14, 2014

The Giants.com staff debates if the team's Free Agent moves will change its Draft strategy

The Giants’ moves in free agency make it less likely for them to draft an offensive lineman in the first round.

  • Click Here for more Fact or Fiction
MICHAEL EISEN: Fiction - You can never have enough good offensive linemen and if the highest-rated player on their board is in that position group, the Giants won’t hesitate to take him.

  • JOHN SCHMEELK: Fiction - The Giants still have needs on the offensive line, despite their moves early on in free agency. I believe if a tackle drops to them in the first round and the college scouting department believes that player is the best on the board, they would still pick the player. Chris Snee and JD Walton both have injury concerns inside, and Kevin Boothe is still a free agent. Pugh can be moved to one of the inside spots and start right away if a tackle does come the Giants way in the first round of the draft.

  • DAN SALOMONE: Fact - I’m not saying it won’t happen, but what the Giants did was prevent themselves from being pigeonholed with the 12th overall pick. If they came up empty in free agency, they would have needed to draft on need and not value, which is a position no team wants to be in.

The Philadelphia Eagles will be the Giants’ toughest NFC East opponent this season.

  • MICHAEL EISEN: Fact - They’re the defending division champs and it will be the second year with Chip Kelly’s offense and Nick Foles at quarterback.

  • JOHN SCHMEELK: Fact - The Eagles were by far the best team in the division last year once Nick Foles became the starting quarterback, and in my opinion they have improved a lot this offseason. Jeremy Maclin is another weapon on offense, and the addition of Darren Sproles in the backfield must have Chip Kelly drooling. On defense they have taken steps to sure up the secondary with Malcolm Jenkins, a safety that will immediately improve a problem area for the team last year. The Cowboys, meanwhile might be worse defensively (if possible) losing DeMarcus Ware, and the Redskins are counting on a coaching change to spur their turn around.

  • DAN SALOMONE: Fact - You have to give credit where credit is due. They’re the reigning division champs until someone knocks them off. While they bolstered their stance this week by picking up quality players like Darren Sproles and Malcolm Jenkins, I would have still said “fact” before free agency opened.

The Giants will add another offensive lineman before the draft.
  • MICHAEL EISEN: Fact - See the first part of my response to No. 1.

  • JOHN SCHMEELK: Fact - The area needs starters and depth. I expect there to be a lot of capable players in training camp competing for spots that will come down to the fourth preseason game. The more good players at that position in the building the better.

  • DAN SALOMONE: Fact - Just like we saw last year with the interior of the defensive line, the Giants are going to add as many big bodies as they can to get this going in the right direction. A mixture of veterans and young talent is the ideal situation.

Josh Brown will make more 50-yard field goals than Stevie Brown has interceptions in 2014.

  • MICHAEL EISEN: Fiction - I prefer to think the Giants will conclude more possessions in or close to the opposing end zone, which will sharply reduce Brown’s long field goal opportunities.

  • JOHN SCHMEELK: Fact - Brown has a big leg, and I’m not sure how many picks Brown will get with Will Hill and Anrel Rolle as dynamic playmakers at safety. It is also a question of how well he can move this year coming off an ACL injury. It might be close, but I’m going with Josh Brown.

  • DAN SALOMONE: Fact - This is a tough one. The kicker named Brown has made a career-high six field goals of 50 yards twice in 2008 and 2009 with the Rams. Meanwhile, the safety named Brown had all eight of his career interceptions in 2012 for the Giants. I’m going to go with Josh because he’s, simply, the only one who will be kicking most likely. Meanwhile, Stevie has guys like Antrel Rolle and Will Hill to compete with.
