Game Notes & Stats; Playoff Scenerio

Posted Dec 23, 2012

Notes, anecdotes and milestones from the Giants’ 33-14 loss to the Baltimore Ravens

*The Giants lost their second game in a row and fell to 8-7. They can no longer win their second straight NFC East title, but they are still in the running for a postseason berth. They must beat 4-11 Philadelphia Sunday in MetLife Stadium and hope Dallas loses or ties and that Chicago and Minnesota lose their finales.

*The Giants lost last week at Atlanta, 34-0. The 14 points is their lowest total in back-to-back games since Nov. 28 and Dec. 5, 2004, when they lost to Philadelphia, 27-6, and Washington, 31-7.

*The Giants lost their fourth consecutive road game and finished 3-5 away from MetLife Stadium. It is their worst road record and the first time they lost four in a row as visitors since 2004, Tom Coughlin’s first season as head coach.

*The Giants finished with 186 total yards, their second-lowest total of the season. They gained 182 yards in a loss to Pittsburgh on November 4.

*One week after finishing with 10 first downs against the Falcons, the Giants had 11 vs. the Ravens.

*The Giants’ 67 rushing yards was their second-lowest total of the season; they ran for 57 yards at Philadelphia on September 30.

*The Giants had 119 net passing yards, their second-lowest total of the season; they threw for 114 yards vs. Pittsburgh.

*The Giants tied a season low by converting only two third down opportunities (in 10 chances). They were two-for-10 vs. Pittsburgh.

*The Giants’ time of possession of 20:29 was lower than last week’s 21:03 and their lowest since they owned the ball for 19:26 vs. New Orleans on Dec. 24, 2006.

*Steve Weatherford punted eight times, the Giants’ highest total since the 15th game of 2011 season, when they had nine punts in a victory over the Jets.

*Baltimore gained 533 yards, the second-highest total in Coughlin’s nine years as head coach. New Orleans totaled 577 yards on Nov. 28, 2011.

*The Ravens rushed for 224 yards, the second-highest total by a Giants opponent this season. Washington ran for 248 yards on October 21.

*Baltimore converted 11 of 18 third-down opportunities – including a pair of third-and-19s – the most success by a Giants opponent since Philadelphia converted 12 of 18 on Dec. 7, 2008.

*Neither team had a turnover, the first time that’s happened in a Giants game since the victory over Atlanta in the 2011 NFC Wild Card Game and the first time in the regular season since Dec. 21, 2008, in an overtime victory over Carolina.

*This was the Giants’ second consecutive non-turnover game in which they lost; it also happened at Washington on December 3. Prior to that, the Giants had won 13 consecutive games (10 regular season and three postseason) in which they did not commit a turnover.

*The Giants also did not have a takeaway last week in Atlanta. It’s the first time they didn’t force a turnover in consecutive games since the final two games of the 2009 season, vs. Carolina and Minnesota.

*The Ravens scored a touchdown on their opening offensive series when Joe Flacco threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Torrey Smith. Baltimore was the second team in a row and fifth this season to score a first-possession touchdown against the Giants. The Giants are 2-3 this season and 16-17 under Coughlin when their opponents score a touchdown the first time they have the ball.

*Flacco’s one-yard quarterback sneak gave the Ravens a touchdown on their second possession. They joined Cincinnati as the only Giants opponents to do that this season. The Giants gave up two touchdowns to open a game only three times since Nov. 1, 2009, but twice in the last six games.

*The Giants trailed at halftime, 24-7. It was the second game in a row they faced a 17-point deficit at the half. Last week, they were behind in Atlanta, 17-0.

*Eli Manning completed 14 of 28 passes for 150 yards, one week after he had 13 completions and threw for 161 yards in Atlanta. They are his first consecutive games with no more than 14 completions since Sept. 30 and Oct. 7, 2007, when he completed 14 and then 13 passes in victories over the Philadelphia Eagles and Jets. They are his first back-to-back games with fewer than 175 yards since Oct. 21 and 28, 2007, when he passed for 146 and 59 yards in victories over San Francisco and Miami.

*Ahmad Bradshaw rushed for 39 yards and caught an eight-yard pass. The 47 yards increased his career total (rushing, receiving and returns) to 7,020. He is the seventh player in Giants history with more than 7,000 total yards.

*Tight end Martellus Bennett led the Giants with four catches for 27 yards.

*Victor Cruz had three receptions for 21 yards, increasing his season totals to 82 catches for 1,040 yards and nine touchdowns. He is the first Giant in history with 80 catches, 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns in consecutive seasons. No other Giant has ever had one such season.

*Hakeem Nicks did not catch a pass, ending his streak with at least one reception in games in which he played at 53. Cruz now has the Giants’ longest active streak at 30 games.

*Because Justin Tuck was inactive with a shoulder injury, Jason Pierre-Paul started in his spot at left defensive end and Osi Umenyiora started on the right side, his third start of the season.

*Second-year linebackers Mark Herzlich, Spencer Paysinger and Jacquian Williams all started as the Giants opened the game with one safety (Antrel Rolle).

*Rolle led the Giants with 10 tackles (eight solo).

*Flacco completed 25 of 36 passes for 309 yards, the fourth 300-yard game by an opposing quarterback this season. The others were by Dallas’ Tony Romo (twice) and New Orleans’ Drew Brees.

*The Giants did not sack Flacco, the fourth time this season they did not register a sack and the fifth time in six games they had zero or one sack.

*Baltimore’s Bernard Pierce (123 yards on 14 carries) and Ray Rice (107 yards on 24 attempts) both exceeded 100 yards, the first pair of opposing running backs to do that since Dec. 24, 2006, when New Orleans’ Reggie Bush (126 yards on 20 carries) and Deuce McAllister (108 yards on 27 attempts) did it.

*Pierce’s 78-yard run (he was stopped one yard short of the goal line) was the longest by a Giants opponent since Buffalo’s Fred Jackson had an 80-yarder on Oct. 16, 2011.

*The Giants’ inactive players were defensive ends Tuck and Adewale Ojomo, safeties Kenny Phillips (knee) and Tyler Sash (hamstring), tight ends Travis Beckum (knee) and Adrien Robinson and wide receiver Ramses Barden.

*The game captains were Cruz and Rolle.
