A nationally-televised home game against the Chicago Bears and a Super Bowl XLVI rematch vs. the New England Patriots will highlight the Giants’ 2012 preseason.
The defending champion Giants today released the opponents for their four preseason games. They will play the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Jets on the road in the first two weeks before returning to MetLife Stadium to face the Bears and Patriots.
The Bears game will be played on Friday, Aug. 24 and be televised by CBS. The Giants will host New England on Wednesday, Aug. 29, seven days prior to their midweek regular season opener at home against the Dallas Cowboys.
The exact dates for the Jaguars and Jets games will be determined in the near future.
The Giants will not play any of their preseason opponents in the regular season.
They will open in Jacksonville in Week 1 of the preseason (Aug. 9-12). The Giants and Jaguars played in every preseason from 1996-2001 and split the series, 3-3.
Tom Coughlin, entering his ninth season as the Giants’ head coach, was then the coach of the Jaguars. This will be Coughlin’s second visit to Jacksonville with the Giants; the Jaguars won a regular season game between the teams in 2006.
The Giants are 34-25-3 in preseason openers since 1950.
In Preseason Week 2 (Aug. 16-19), the Giants will be the visiting team when they meet the Jets in their annual preseason game. The Giants and Jets will square off for the 44th consecutive preseason since the series began in 1969. The Jets won last year’s game, 17-3. In 2010, the Giants won the first game played in MetLife Stadium, 31-16, when then-rookie receiver
The Giants defeated the Jets, 29-14, in a regular season game last Dec. 24, the first victory in a six-game winning streak that culminated in their Super Bowl triumph.
The Giants will host the Bears in a nationally-televised preseason game for the second consecutive year. On Aug. 22, 2011, they crushed Chicago, 44-13.
The two teams will meet in the preseason for the third time in four years. On Aug. 22, 2009, the Bears defeated the Giants, 17-3, in Soldier Field, which was the ancient rivals’ first preseason meeting since Aug. 5, 2000.
From 1950-1963, the Giants and Bears met in 11 preseason games in locations as varied as Toronto, Memphis, Syracuse and Ithaca, N.Y. The Giants won five of those games. Overall, the Giants are 7-9 in preseason games vs. the Bears.
To conclude the preseason, the Giants will host the Patriots, a team they defeated three times last year – 18-17 in the preseason, 24-20 in the regular season and, most importantly, 21-17 in Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis. This will be the eighth consecutive year the two teams have closed the preseason by facing one another. The Giants lead the preseason series, 13-8. The two teams first met in the preseason in 1971.
The Giants were 2-2 in the preseason in 2011, beating Chicago and New England and losing to the Jets and Carolina. They are 16-16 in the preseason in Coughlin’s eight years as head coach.
