The Giants today bolstered their depleted offensive backfield by signing running backs Ryan Torain and Kregg Lumpkin.
Brown yesterday was placed on injured reserve with a designation to return, leaving an opening on the roster. The Giants created another one by waiving offensive lineman
Torain, 6-1 and 220 pounds, played one season with Denver and two with the Washington Redskins, who the Giants will face Monday night in FedEx Field. He appeared in 20 games with 13 starts and has career totals of 238 rushing attempts for 1,011 yards (4.2-yard average), a long run of 54 yards and six touchdowns. He also has 24 receptions for 148 yards (6.2-yard average) and two scores.
In 2011, Torain played in eight games with four starts for the Redskins. He rushed for 200 yards and a touchdown on 59 carries and caught six passes for 23 yards. He was waived by Washington on December 27.
Torain, who played two seasons at Arizona State, entered the NFL as a fifth-round draft choice of the Denver Broncos in 2008. He fractured his elbow in August and didn’t make his pro debut until November 2 vs. Miami. Four days later he started in Cleveland, but suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament. He ended his rookie season with 69 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.
Torain did not play in 2009 after reaching an injury settlement with the Broncos. He signed with Washington on Sept. 4, 2010. That season, he had career-high totals of 10 games played, eight starts, 164 carries, 742 yards, six touchdowns (four rushing, two receiving) and 18 catches. Torain ran for a career-best 172 yards vs. Tampa Bay on Dec. 12, 2010.
Torain enrolled at Arizona State after attending Butler Community College. At ASU, he played in 19 games with 14 starts and had 323 rushing attempts for 1,782 yards (5.5-yard avg.) and 12 touchdowns and caught 25 passes for 305 yards (12.2-yard avg.) and five scores.
Lumpkin also entered the league in 2008, when he signed with the Packers as a free agent out of Georgia. He played in two games for Green Bay that year and spent the 2009 season on the Packers’ practice squad. He was waived on Sept. 4, 2010. Lumpkin was awarded to the Buccaneers, for whom he played 11 games that year and all 16 games in 2011.
Lumpkin’s career totals are 33 carries for 124 yards (3.8-yard avg.) and 45 receptions for 325 yards (7.2-yard avg.). He has not scored a touchdown.
The Seattle Seahawks signed Lumpkin as a free agent on March 13, 2012. In the preseason, he led the Seahawks with 40 rushing attempts, which produced 160 yards and a touchdown.
Lumpkin’s contract was terminated on September 18.
At Georgia, Lumpkin shared the running back spot with several players, including former Giant D.J. Ware. He rushed for 1,699 yards and 14 touchdowns on 352 carries.
The team also terminated the practice squad contract of running back
