Giants announce practice squad; claim DT Robert Thomas

The Giants have acquired DT Robert Thomas, and announced the 10-man practice squad:

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Giants’ busy Labor Day Weekend continued today as they added a player to their defensive front, and signed 10 players to their practice squad.

Defensive tackle Robert Thomas was awarded off waivers to the Giants, one day after he was released by the Carolina Panthers. To create a roster opening for Thomas, the Giants waived defensive tackle Montori Hughes.

Thomas, 6-3 and 325 pounds, was acquired by the Panthers off waivers from the Miami Dolphins on April 29. He played in all four of Carolina’s preseason games and was credited with seven tackles (five solo), including two for losses.

Thomas has played in one regular-season game, for the Dolphins vs. Baltimore last Dec. 6, when he assisted on a tackle.

His NFL career began when he signed with Washington as an undrafted rookie in 2014. He spent most of that season on the Redskins’ practice squad (and did a short stint on the active roster) before being released on Sept. 5, 2015. Thomas then did stints on the practice squads of the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots before joining the Dolphins on Dec. 1.

Miami released Thomas on April 28, and he joined the Panthers the following day.

Hughes, a four-year veteran, joined the Giants’ practice squad on Sept. 7, 2015, and the active roster on Nov. 10. He played in seven games, and tallied 25 tackles (15 solo) and a fumble recovery.

•  The practice squad players were all with the Giants in training camp and were waived within the past week: quarterback Logan Thomas; wide receivers Geremy Davis and Darius Powe; offensive linemen Adam Gettis and Shane McDermott; defensive ends Stansly Maponga and Ishaq Williams; cornerbacks Donte Deayon and Michael Hunter; and safety Andrew Adams.

Davis (10 games, 2 receptions), Maponga (2) and Gettis (1) appeared in regular-season games for the Giants in 2015. Davis, a 2015 sixth-round selection, is the only former Giants draft choice on the practice squad.

Thomas played in two regular-season games and one postseason game for the 2014 Arizona Cardinals.
