Giants continue to experiment along O-Line

Posted Aug 27, 2013

The Giants will continue to try different combincations at O-Line vs. the Patriots

The latest reshuffling of the Giants’ offensive line has Kevin Boothe back at center and James Brewer at left guard. Brewer started 21 games at right tackle at Indiana University and played right guard early in training camp when Chris Snee was on the physically unable to perform list. How many snaps did he get at his new position before this week?

“Zero,” said Brewer, who has played in only six regular-season games since the Giants selected him on the fourth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. “I haven’t been on the left side since last preseason when they had me do some left tackle.”

But that doesn’t dampen his enthusiasm for his current challenge.

“I’m very excited to be playing left guard,” Brewer said. “Honestly, just the chance to start is big for me and whether or not I’m on the left side or right side, as long as I’m on the field. My main objective is to be on the field. Wherever they feel the need to put me at to do so is a blessing. That’s really how I feel about that.”

The Giants have tried different combinations on the line since center David Baas and right tackle David Diehl were injured against Indianapolis last week. Baas hopes to return for the Sept. 8 season opener in Dallas, while Diehl is expected to be sidelined six weeks after undergoing thumb surgery.

Last week vs. the Jets, Jim Cordle played center and Boothe was at his usual left guard spot. Now Boothe has moved over and Brewer gets his chance.

“We’re a very versatile group as a whole,” Brewer said. “Just with what happened to Baas, for them to give Jimmy that same chance that they’re giving me right now. Nothing’s set in stone, they’re just kind of shuffling things around, seeing which best five is going to give our team the best chance up front and I just look at it as a shot to prove that I’m the next guy up.”
