Giants waive Uani 'Unga; sign rookie CB Matt Smalley

The Giants announce roster moves as offseason workouts continue:

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Giants today added a young cornerback when they signed rookie Matt Smalley from Lafayette College.

To create room on their roster, the Giants waived/injured linebacker Uani ‘Unga.

Smalley, 5-10 and 195 pounds, was not drafted. He attended the team’s rookie minicamp last week as a tryout player.

Smalley was a three-time All-Patriot League first-team selection as a defensive back and return specialist.

In four seasons, Smalley played in 42 games with 30 starts. He was credited with 175 tackles (107 solo), intercepted seven passes and had 32 passes defensed, four sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Smalley also averaged 24.8 yards on 48 kickoff returns, including two touchdowns, one a 99-yarder.

In 2015, Smalley started all nine games in which he played. He finished fifth on the team with 44 tackles (31 solo), including 2.5 for losses, and added an interception, seven passes defensed and a forced fumble. He also returned 15 kickoffs for a 21.1-yard average, with a long runback of 43 yards. Smalley won the school’s Hugh H. “Stoney” Jones ’27 Award as the team’s most valuable player.

‘Unga made the roster last season as a first-year free agent and played in 13 games with three starts. He was inactive for three games with a neck injury. ‘Unga finished the season with 59 tackles (42 solo), two interceptions, four passes defensed and two forced fumbles.
