How did NFC East rivals fare on Day 1?

Posted May 9, 2014

Keeping an eye on the NFC East, Giants.com went around the division to see how Big Blue’s closest rivals fared in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (from Indianapolis via Cleveland)

Rd 1 - #26 (26)    Marcus Smith, DE, Louisville

  • Andy Jasner (ESPN)“The Eagles went outside the box and selected Smith from Louisville with the No. 26 overall pick. The Eagles have clear-cut needs at wide receiver, so this is a bit surprising. Smith can rush the passer, which is a skill the Eagles covet. Was he worth a first-round pick? That will be worth watching this season. Thumbs down.

  • Peter Prisco (CBSSports.com): “The Eagles need a young pass rusher, and he can provide that. He's athletic and fits their scheme. I get it. GRADE: B

  • Bryan Fischer (NFL.com): “Sure, it was a bit of a reach, but Smith's name had been rising up boards in recent months. They could have used a cornerback like the higher-rated Bradley Roby, but they addressed a need by getting an outside linebacker who can come off the edge and spell Trent Cole.”

  • Derek Stephens (NFLDraftScout.com): "The Eagles take one of the more intriguing pass-rush prospects here in the long-armed Smith. He's raw in terms of developing a repertoire of moves, but he has the initial burst you like to see, plays with intensity, and understands how to utilize his superb length (34' arms) to beat bigger blockers. Serious upside here.GRADE: B+

  • Doug Farrar (SI.com): “Smith will have to provide fairly instant quarterback pressure to validate this pick, but it’s not out of the question, especially in a defense as variable as Philadelphia’s. GRADE: B-

DALLAS COWBOYS

Rd 1 - #16 (16)    Zack Martin, OT, Notre Dame

  • Todd Archer  (ESPN): “The Cowboys made a football decision by taking Martin when Johnny Manziel was staring them in the face. It had to be a tough call for Jerry Jones, but it's the right one. The decision cements the offensive line, which helps Tony Romo and, to a small degree, the defense. The rest of the draft can be about getting the defense fixed. Thumbs up.

  • Pete Prisco (CBSSports.com): “This is a good pick for a team that needed line help. They didn't get caught up in the hype. The line will be damn good. GRADE: B+

  • Bryan Fischer (NFL.com): "Jerry, how could you! The Cowboys passed on Johnny Manziel, but they did address a much more pressing need in beefing up the offensive line with one of the most versatile linemen in the draft. Tony Romo, bad back and all, is pretty happy after Thursday night."

  • Derek Stephens (NFLDraftScout.com): "Although considered to be undersized for an NFL tackle, Martin may be the most versatile and fundamentally-sound O-lineman in the entire class. He can line up anywhere along the front line, and should be an upgrade right out of the gate for the Cowboys, at any spot but left tackle. GRADE: A-

  • Doug Farrar (SI.com): “Is Martin as a guard worthy of a mid-first round pick? That’s debatable. But over and over on tape, Martin shows that he’s a true ass-kicker, with a fiery mentality and tremendous upper-body strength. He’ll have to get comfortable with a few new things, but he wouldn’t be the first college tackle to kick inside – and he may wind up as one of the best. GRADE: B
