It wasn’t exactly a 99-yard sprint to the end zone, but Rueben Randle’s 43-yard jump ball catch provided a spark late in the first quarter for the Giants on Sunday.

The rookie wide receiver’s play eventually led to David Wilson’s 14-yard touchdown run and cut New York’s early 14-point deficit in half.

However, unlike Victor Cruz’s memorable play last year against the Jets – also in Week 16 and (technically) on the road – the Giants were unable to build from there with another season on the line.

“We thought it was something that got us going a little bit,” Cruz said after Sunday’s 33-14 loss in Baltimore. “And right after David Wilson scored, we thought we were going to get the ball rolling. Unfortunately, their offense did a good job of driving down and keeping us off the field and we couldn’t convert after that.”

The Giants, who wouldn’t score again until 3:24 left in the game, made just 11 first downs overall while the Ravens controlled the ball for nearly 40 minutes.

Randle’s catch would be his only one of the day but was enough for him to lead the team in receiving yards on a day when Cruz caught three passes for 21 yards and Hakeem Nicks was held without a reception in a game he played for the first time in his four-year career.

“It takes one play to kind of change the focus,” Cruz said. “But it takes a full team effort to get us there where we need to be.”
