With a healthy backup competition underway in 2013, Giants.com takes a look at some of the franchise’s recent quarterback battles:
Eli Manning/Kurt Warner -- On Nov. 21, 2004, Manning made his first career start in a Week 11 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Warner, who had joined the Giants before training camp that year, started the previous nine games (plus a bye week), leading the Giants to a 5-4 start. However, Warner had just six touchdowns to four interceptions up to that point, opening up the job for Manning, who has started each game ever since.
Dave Brown/Kent Graham – With Phil Simms and Jeff Hostetler off the team, the quarterback position blew open in 1994. Brown, drafted by the Giants in the 1992 Supplemental Draft, went on to beat out Graham, taken the same year in the eighth round, and led the Giants to a 9-7 season in 1994. Brown went on to start all 16 games of the next two seasons for the Giants.
Jeff Hostetler/Phil Simms – In one of the most storied quarterback situations, Hostetler became the team’s No. 1 in 1990 when Simms broke his foot in the 14th game of the regular season, guiding the Giants to an eventual Super Bowl victory. Both injury and performance dictated the position until Simms retired in 1994 and Hostetler signed with the Raiders.
Phil Simms/Scott Brunner – Drafted a year apart, Simms and Brunner competed in the early 1980’s to lead the Giants’ offense. Brunner replaced an injured Simms in 1981 and played the majority of the next two seasons until being traded to Denver after the 1983 season. Simms took over in 1984 and went on to win the Super Bowl two years later.

Jared Lorenzen/Anthony Wright – After spending the previous eight seasons on four different teams, Wright signed with the Giants in 2007, placing him in a competition with Lorenzen, undrafted out of Kentucky in 2004, to be Manning’s backup.
