Notes, Stats & Milestones vs. Bengals

Posted Nov 11, 2012

Notes and statistics from the Giants’ 31-13 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in Paul Brown Stadium

*The Giants lost their second game in a row and fell to 6-4 entering their bye week.

*The 18-point margin of defeat was the Giants’ largest since a 49-24 loss at New Orleans on Nov. 28, 2011.

*The Giants have lost consecutive games against AFC opponents after winning eight in a row, including Super Bowl XLVI.

*Meaningless statistics department: The Giants out-gained the Bengals, 318-275, out-rushed them, 129-76, and had a 21-15 advantage in first downs.

*The Giants have scored three offensive touchdowns in their last three games, all on runs by Andre Brown (of one, one and, on Sunday, two yards).

*When Brown scored with 2:46 remaining, it ended a streak of five consecutive quarters without a touchdown, the Giants' longest streak since Nov. 26-Dec. 6, 2009, when they also went five quarters without a touchdown.

*The Bengals took a 7-0 lead on the fifth play of the game when Andy Dalton threw a 56-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Green – who scored a touchdown for the eighth consecutive game. Cincinnati was the second opposing team to score an opening-possession touchdown vs. the Giants this season. Cleveland did it on Oct. 7 on a 15-yard run by Trent Richardson.

The Giants are (15-15) under Tom Coughlin when the opposing team scores a touchdown on its first offensive series.

*The 56-yard play was the second-longest allowed by the Giants this season. Cleveland’s Brandon Weeden threw a  62-yard touchdown pass to Josh Gordon.

*The Giants trailed, 14-0, just 4:07 into the game. It was the Giants’ second 14-0 deficit of the season; they were behind by two touchdowns early in their victory over Cleveland on Oct. 7. The Giants had last allowed two touchdowns that quickly at the start of the game on Nov. 1, 2009 at Philadelphia, where they gave up two in the first 3:45.

*The Bengals were the first Giants opponents to score touchdowns on each of their first two offensive possessions since Miami on Oct. 30, 2011.

*The Giants trailed at halftime, 17-6, the second time this season they faced an 11-point deficit after two quarters. They were behind Tampa Bay, 24-13, on Sept. 16, but rallied for a 41-34 victory.

*It was the third time this season the Giants did not score a first-half touchdown (also against Dallas on Sept. 5 and at Philadelphia on Sept. 30). The Giants have lost their last seven games in which they did not score a touchdown in the first two quarters. They last won such a game on Nov. 6, 2011 at New England, where the teams were in a scoreless tie at halftime.

*The Giants did not score a touchdown in the first three quarters for the first time since Dec. 18, 2011, when a 20-3 deficit led to a 23-10 loss to Washington.

*The Giants’ turned over the ball four times (two interceptions, two fumbles), their highest one-game total since giving it up five times in a loss to Seattle on Oct. 9, 2011 (when they threw three interceptions and lost two fumbles).

*Three of the turnovers occurred on consecutive third-quarter possessions, including two Eli Manning interceptions. It was the first time the Giants had three successive giveaways, and Manning had his first back-to-back picks, since Dec. 26, 2010 at Green Bay.

*Manning completed 29 of 46 passes for 215 yards. The 29 completions were his second-highest total of the season; he had 31 vs. Tampa Bay on Sept. 16.

*Manning has not thrown a touchdown pass in three consecutive games, the second time that’s happened in his career and the first time since his second, third and fourth starts as a rookie (Nov. 28-Dec 12, 2004 against Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington).

*Manning was sacked four times, the most takedowns allowed by the Giants since Sept. 11, 2011, when Manning was sacked four times at Washington. The previous high this season was three sacks on opening night vs. Dallas. The Giants entered the game having allowed an NFL-low nine sacks.

*Hakeem Nicks caught nine passes for 75 yards, his highest receptions total since he had 10 vs. Tampa Bay. It was the fourth time this season a Giants receiver had at least nine catches in a game. Besides the two by Nicks, Victor Cruz had 11 receptions vs. Tampa Bay and Ramses Barden had nine at Carolina on Sept. 20.

*Ahmad Bradshaw had 10 carries for 57 yards to increase his career rushing total to 3,892 yards. That moved him past Ron Johnson (3,836) and into sixth place on the Giants’ career list.

*The Giants defense did not record a sack for the second time this season (also vs. Cleveland on Oct. 7).

*Adam Jones’ 68-yard punt return in the first quarter was the longest by a Giants’ opponent since Dallas’ Dez Bryant had a 93-yarder on Oct. 25, 2010.

*Wide receiver Domenik Hixon and safety Tyler Sash suffered first-half ankle injuries and did not return.

*With the loss, the Giants fell into a tie with NFC East rival Dallas for the NFL’s best record prior to a regular-season bye:

Team Won/Lost Percentage
Giants 18-6 .750
Dallas Cowboys 18-6 .750
Seattle Seahawks 17-6 .739
New Orleans Saints 16-8 .667
San Francisco 49ers 15-8 .652
Minnesota Vikings 15-8 .652
*Dalton was the first opposing quarterback to throw four touchdown passes against the Giants since Dallas’ Tony Romo on Dec. 11, 2011 in a 37-34 Giants victory.

*The Giants fell to 0-6 in Cincinnati and trail in the series, 6-3.

*The Giants won the coin toss for the seventh time this season and deferred taking the ball until the start of the second half for the first time.

*Prince Amukamara led the Giants with 10 tackles (seven solo).

*The Giants’ inactive players were safety Kenny Phillips (knee), linebackers Jacquian Williams (knee) and Keith Rivers (calf), wide receiver Jerrel Jernigan, defensive tackle Marvin Austin, defensive end Adewale Ojomo and tight end Adrien Robinson.

*The game captains were Chase Blackburn and Domenik Hixon, two players who live in Ohio and attended the University of Akron.
