Saying an NFL player has size is redundant. Saying that about a defensive lineman is even more so. But looking at the three in the Ravens’ 3-4 defense, that’s the only word that comes to mind.

Defensive tackle Haloti Ngata (6-4, 340) is the fixture of the group as the only every-snap player, while defensive coordinator Dean Pees has rotated the rest of the line. Terrence Cody (6-4, 349) has started at nose tackle the past two weeks, and Arthur Jones (6-3, 315) sees most of the time at defensive end. Meanwhile, Ma’ake Kemoeatu (6-5, 345) is there to plug the run and Pernell McPhee (6-3, 280) to rush the passer.

“You see size up front,” offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride said. “They’re very powerful, big, difficult to move, displace. It’s hard to get a consistent running game. They’ve had some injuries with their linebackers, so I’m sure they’re feeling inconsistent, but we see the ability level. We know we have our challenges.”

Just because they’re big, though, doesn’t mean they lack in speed.

“They do some moving around, but I feel like you just have to sort it out and don’t get confused,” center David Baas said. “We have to bring the physical game to them because we know how physical they can be. They’re known for that. We’ve got to step up our efforts and come out there firing on all cylinders.”
