OC Kevin Gilbride - 12/13

Posted Dec 13, 2012

Offensive Coordinator Kevin Gilbride on Giants offensive gameplan

Q:  What does it mean if Ahmad Bradshaw can’t play Sunday?
A:  When you have a guy that’s been an important part of your success, it’s troublesome, you’re always concerned. Fortunately, we’ve had guys that have always stepped up and recognized the absence of one player is going to require somebody else to elevate their game, whether it’s performance on the field, or emotional. His toughness…everyone is appreciative of that aspect of his game and the enthusiasm he brings. When you lose that…you listen to him, he’s not sure it’s lost, but we’ll see.

Q:  With the lack of depth at running back, why has Kregg Lumpkin been able to get on the field?
A:  I think you addressed it pretty accurately, there’s a desperate need for him to do that and we’ve used him in third down situations primarily because he’s absorbed the blocking responsibilities pretty well. He seems to be physically capable of fulfilling the things that are required at that position. So far, he’s done a reasonably good job.

Q:  How is a guy like Ahmad Bradshaw able to succeed on Sunday without practicing all week?

A:  I think the fact that he’s been here enough for as long as he has, so he has a great command of what we’re doing. There’s no question that it detracts from his performance. That he’s not physically able to practice just means that he’s not at 100%. So obviously that’s impacting on his game and secondly, no one is as good unless they’re constantly refining, fine-tuning your play, your technique, that’s what it comes down to. After awhile, “here’s my skill level, how can I most efficiently use it,” and the only way you do that is to practice your skill over and over again.

Q:  Did your confidence in David Wilson rise after his performance this week?

A:  He made the two good runs that were great to see. The one where he kind of lowered his shoulder and ran over a linebacker, which we’ve seen the toughness before and then when he had the opening that was exceptionally well blocked, to be able to take what would’ve been an eight-fifteen yard gain, and take it to the house, was great to see. He’s still got some areas that you guys won’t see that need some significant upgrading, so we can keep the entire offense going. It was tremendous to see his dynamism and what he was able to give us in that respect. It was a big lift.

Q:  When a guy has a game like that, the media asks, “where has this guy been all season?” Are you still comfortable with waiting so long to let him progress?

A:  Again, he’s had chances; that was the first time he’s done anything. That’s where you sometimes overlook those aspects; he has been able to carry, and in fact, until those two runs to the end, he was three runs for three yards. Again, it was great to see him do what he did, both in the special teams and the few times that he ran the ball and we were able to give it to him at the end. He did a terrific job for us so we’re ecstatic.

Q:  It seems like the six-yard touchdown run may have been more impressive than the 50-yard touchdown run?

A:  I’m not sure about that, but I was impressed and enjoyed both of them. It was the physical toughness of the six-yard (touchdown) that was great to see, and of course, the speed, you know he has. It was exceptionally well blocked, Martellus (Bennett) and Bear Pascoe and Henry (Hynoski) just cleaned it up, but there’s not many guys that would’ve been able to convert that 10-yard (run) into the touchdown the way he did. That was something we knew he had, again, it’s just a matter of not always getting it blocked like that. Can you make people miss? Well, he hasn’t done that necessarily, but I think his reads are getting better. I knew he would run hard. I didn’t know that he’d be able to run over a linebacker the way he did, which was tremendous to see. He’s just getting better and better, I think his comfort level is growing and he’s making fewer mistakes and his entry decisions in the run-game are giving him a better chance to use the skills he has, which is his toughness and speed.
