Players to Watch vs. the Steelers

Posted Aug 9, 2013

Keep an eye on these players as the Giants take on the Steelers in Preseason Week 1

LB Mark Herzlich – After 11 practices, Herzlich is still holding the spot in which he entered camp: starting middle linebacker. That alone tells you about his performance heading into his third season after coming in undrafted in 2011. Herzlich has shown command of the defense, and along with the rest of the first teamers, is expected to play most of the opening quarter against Pittsburgh. We’ll see how his progress translates to live reps.

Pittsburgh Steelers: Roster Analysis
WR Rueben Randle – Head coach Tom Coughlin said Eli Manning will go 12 or 15 snaps, and don’t be surprised if he uses one to try to hit a home run with Randle. The second-year wide receiver has picked up where he left off last season and is ready to break out. In the last game he played, he put together a two-touchdown performance in the 2012 regular season finale against Philadelphia.  He has a knack for winning jump balls. I bet we’ll see one Saturday night.

CB Prince Amukamara – Other than Randle, Amukamara has improved his stock the most at Giants training camp. Certainly that’s true on the defensive side. There’s a different demeanor to him out on the field. He’s physical and playing with a great deal of confidence. Day after day, he keeps deflecting passes or grabbing interceptions. That’s not to say he hasn’t let anything by him, but when he does, he comes right back and responds. He’s heading into the preseason slate with momentum, which is all you can ask from a player during camp.

TE Brandon Myers – Over the last few years, there has been a revolving door in the tight ends room at 1925 Giants Drive. But the team makes it work. From Kevin Boss to Jake Ballard to Martellus Bennett, Myers is the next in line to fill the role. He’s coming off a 79-catch season in Oakland after never having more than 16 in his first three seasons in the NFL. So far, he has proven to be a reliable target for Manning.

K Josh Brown – Brown has big shoes to fill with the departure of Lawrence Tynes and his storied Giants career. Brown has looked strong so far at camp, but we haven’t seen a whole lot of live field goal attempts. He seems to be fitting in well with punter/holder Steve Weatherford and snapper Zak DeOssie, which will go a long way in their timing and chemistry on the field. There’s no backup kicker this year, so Brown will get all of the work.

Also keep an eye on:

CB Jayron Hosley
– In a similar boat with Amukamara – but a year behind in his career – Hosley has made some plays in training camp and is everywhere on special teams.

DT Johnathan Hankins
– Defensive tackle has been one of the deepest competitions at Giants camp, and Hankins isn’t only showing he belongs in the NFL but that he can contribute.

QB Ryan Nassib
– Anytime a quarterback is drafted, people want to watch. We don’t know yet if he’ll be playing third behind Manning and David Carr. However, Coughlin said he thinks he will try to work all four quarterbacks into the game (Curtis Painter being the other).

LB Etienne Sabino
– Earlier this week, linebackers coach Jim Herrmann said he is excited to get the undrafted rookie out of Ohio State into the game and see what he can do.

OL Brandon Mosley
– Listed as a tackle, Mosley is likely to start at right guard for the Giants, where he has worked with the first team this week. Chris Snee, the fixture at the position, was activated off the physically unable to perform list this week but is not yet ready for a live game.
