Practice report: Final tune-up before Jaguars

Giants.com's Dan Salomone highlights five takeaways from Training Camp

1. Beason highlighted a “cards day” in preparation for Jacksonville.

Thursday’s training camp practice featured mainly scout team work with the defense going off scripted “cards” against the offense -- and vice versa -- in preparation for Saturday night’s second preseason game at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Against the scout offense, linebacker Jon Beason notched the lone interception for the play of the day.

In 88 career games, Beason has 10 interceptions.

2. Cunningham, Jones, Davis hauled in touchdowns.

All three of the Giants quarterbacks got on the board in the touchdown ledger today, throwing to three different targets. First up was Eli Manning, who hit tight end Jerome Cunningham in stride in the corner of the end zone. Ryan Nassib then connected with wide receiver James Jones, and Ricky Stanzi found rookie wide receiver Geremy Davis for scores.

3. Harris factoring into offense.

With fellow receivers Victor Cruz (calf) and Rueben Randle (knee tendinitis) likely out for this weekend’s preseason matchup, opportunities are there for players to step up in a deep position race.

Dwayne Harris, who joined the Giants this offseason after playing mostly special teams in Dallas, took some reps with the first team today at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center, catching a handful of passes from Manning. Davis, Corey Washington and James Jones also rotated in and out with the first team.

4. Pugh, Odell returned to practice.

As expected, offensive lineman Justin Pugh and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. practiced on Thursday after both underwent dental work and missed yesterday’s session.

Pugh was back at left guard where he has been for most of this season. Meanwhile, cornerback Prince Amukamara took team reps for the second-straight day after returning from a groin injury.

5. Right side of offensive line stayed intact.

Coach Tom Coughlin said before practice that “in all likelihood” John Jerry and Marshall Newhouse would be the starting right guard and right tackle, respectively, in Saturday’s game. That was the case in practice today, while Geoff Schwartz rotated in and out with the ones and twos at right guard.

“I think we’re healthier now than we’ve been,” Pugh said today. “We’ve got some things going in the right direction, we have competition now. With (Geoff) Schwartz coming back, me getting back into the mix today, it’s going to be good. I think it’s going to bring out the best, and I think it’s going to bring out the best in this offensive line. We’re seeing some things and executing some things that gave us trouble earlier in camp. So we’re definitely heading in the right direction and I’m excited to see the progress we make from here on out. It’s going to be fun.”
