Coach Tom Coughlin
Q: What’s the latest on JPP?
A: What about him?
Q: Whether or not he’s going to play.
A: He’s practiced. We listed him as questionable. Done a good job of what we’ve asked him to do.
Q: Victor had said he was going to maybe test himself a little more on the turf. Was there more that he did today? What did he do today? How did he look?
A: He did basically the same thing he’s been doing. He didn’t do any more or any less.
Q: But he’s come through everything so far so good?
A: So far so good.
Q: So the same, questionable, for Victor?
A: I think we listed him as probable.
Q: Tom, with JPP, is that going to be like a Sunday morning decision?
A: No. Whatever we make our minds up. It’s not going to be game time. We’ll make up our minds before that. The medical people will have more to say about that, I’m sure.
Q: Did you watch last night’s game or were you too busy working?
A: I did see some of the first quarter because it was delayed. That was it. Just a little bit into the second quarter.
Q: What did you think of the stats when you saw them this morning?
A: I don’t know what to think. I didn’t see it, so I’ll take a look at the tape though.
Q: If JPP could go, would he be a limited availability? A limited number of snaps?
A: We’ll have to wait and see on that.
Q: Not to keep going down the list, but with
A: I think they’re both questionable. Listed as questionable.
Q: Tom, is there anything you can share about how you’ll make the determination with JPP?
A: We’ll just take all of the information, based on the three days of work, listen to the medical people again, and then make that decision.
Q: Is he going on the trip regardless?
A: He’ll be on the trip. So he can get in my ear longer. I‘d hate to be that far away from him, then he’d have to call me on the phone.
Q: You going to put him in the back? You can sit up front?
A: I sit in the middle.
Q: Victor signed a big contract in the offseason.
A: He did?
Q: He said that he was the same person and the same player after signing the contract.
A: He is.
Q: In what ways?
A: He’s still a very humble kid in my mind. He enjoys himself. He enjoys what he’s doing. He likes being around his teammates. He’s the same guy. No doubt about it.
Q: The idea of Eli, Hakeem and Victor together is pretty dynamic.
A: That’s what we’re counting on.
Q: How do you balance having a Super Bowl countdown clock in the locker room and then one game at a time?
A: That’s just a mental thing for the players to refer to. What my position has been on that is that you’ve got to earn that right. We realize where the Super Bowl is being played. We all understand and have heard it over the course of the year and the offseason. Any type of motivation that we can accomplish with that, we’ll do that, but that’s a lofty goal and 32 teams in this league right now have that as their goal and you’ve got to work your way towards that. That’s the way we’ve always been, to be honest with you. We have our goals. Certainly that’s one of them. The direct way that you get to have a chance to be in the playoffs is that you’ve got to do a good job in your division.
Q: Does it make it easier to keep the guys focused on just this game when it’s Sunday night and a division rival at their house?
A: It’s the first game of the 2013 season. They’re all excited about playing. That’s just the nature of our game and our competitive spirits.
Q: Do you sense anything different about this team going into this opener versus last year’s opener?
A: Not that I can tell you directly or what have you, but we’re excited to be in this position.
Q: Is Nicks where you want him to be physically?
A: He’s practiced every day. He’s really been there the majority of the time.
Q: What’s the difference between him now and last year?
A: We’ll have to see on that. I’m fully expecting that he’s the same guy and the same outstanding football player. He’s done all the work we’ve asked him to do out here and he’s done it.
Q: Earlier in the week you told us that you might like to try out your heel on the artificial surface. Have you had a chance to do that and what were the results?
A: I haven’t had a chance to do that, at least not yet. So I have a day tomorrow, I’ll probably get just a couple routes on it tomorrow, nothing too crazy. But I’m confident. I feel good, I feel like I’m in shape, I feel like the heel is much better. I’m not leaning or favoring the other leg or anything like that so it feels good. I’m anxious to go out there and see what I can do on game day.
Q: And stamina and conditioning are not a problem since, basically, you were working out all offseason anyway.
A: Yeah, stamina is not a problem. I kept myself in shape and have been working. Even through the two weeks when I wasn’t practicing or anything, they had me in here working, so stamina won’t be an issue.
Q: Did you actually ever get that official clearance from the doctor?
A: I’m going in there right now as soon as you guys leave. Perfect timing.
Q: Being “probable” pretty much means you’re going to play.
A: For the most part, but I’ve still got to make sure the doctors check it out and get their word. But most likely.
Q: Is there anything in particular that you still need to find out about your running or cutting that you haven’t already learned about?
A: No. I’ve been practicing full-go. I’ve been limited in certain areas but I’ve been pretty much practicing in getting my footing down and cutting and things like that and everything feels pretty normal. I just want the doctors to give one last look at it and tell me what they think and then we’ll go from there.
Q: You went through a lot since last season. Do you still feel like the same person? The same player?
A: I do, I do. I feel like the same person. I feel like the same player. I’m still out there making plays. It’s the same playbook, I just have to go out there and continue to execute. Nothing has really changed other than, obviously, the bank account, but that doesn’t bother me or hinder the way I play the game.
Q: Do you think Eli has seven touchdowns in his arm like someone did last night?
A: I hope so. I hope some of that brotherly love rubs off on us. Eli is good, he’s going to go out there and make his reads and if something happens, it happens. If not, as long as we come out victorious, that’s all we care about.
Q: You’re taking your talents to Dallas to play?
A: I’m going to make the trip. It’s going to be a game time decision. I’m going to ask the coaching staff and I’m going to ask the coach. That’s basically it.
Q: Is there something that needs to happen? Are you going to test it before the game?
A: I’m going to go out there, I’ve got three days of practice under my belt in practice. I’m going to go out there and come game time I’m going to ask the trainer how I feel and see where he’s at with it.
Q: How have you been doing after each practice?
A: I’ve been getting better. My back feels strong. I’ve been getting a couple of reps so I’m feeling good right now.
Q: No soreness?
A: No, no soreness at all.
Q: How do you feel with the double teams that you were talking about?
A: Like I said, it’s only been three days of practice. It’s not like a real game situation, I’m facing our players and we’re going against Dallas this week. It’s different when you’re going against your teammates and you know when to lay off on him or going against another player. We’ll see.
Q: Would if be fair to say that if you don’t have a setback you would think you would play?
A: Maybe. It’s going to be up to the coach and the training staff. We’ll see. At the end of the day I’m going to make the trip and it’s going to be a game time decision.
Q: You’re encouraged…
A: Of course.
Q: You talked about your conditioning earlier in the week…
A: My conditioning is still down, man. It’s still down. I’ve been trying to get it up and that’s a big part, too, so I’m not going to put my team in jeopardy if I know I can’t play.
Q: Have you guys talked about a snap total?
A: Not at all. Like I said, it’s going to be up to the coaches. It’s going to be up to them, so we’ll see.
Q: The flight to Dallas is over three hours, how concerned are you making the flight with your back?
A: I haven’t been on a plane ever since I left California so that’s a big thing, too. As I said, it’s going to be a game time decision and it’s going to be a long flight there. We’ll see. Hopefully come game time I’m out there, but if I’m not, I’m pretty sure my team will do good without me.
If I’m out there playing, I’m going to play as hard as I possibly can. If not, I’m going to get ready for next week.
Q: JPP is also listed as questionable and Tom said that he was making the trip regardless. Are you, in your mind, making the trip regardless?
A: Oh yeah, I’m going on the trip regardless. It’s just part of the process. I’m healthy for the most part and if the team needs me there, it’s my duty as a member of this team to go on this trip and to support, whether I play or not.
Q: You say for the most part, is there something…
A: You know what I mean. I feel good. Everything’s going well. I had a great week. Every day, I feel more comfortable out there. No issues with pain or any setbacks as far as that’s concerned.
