Secondary/Corners Coach Peter Giunta - 11/13

Posted Nov 13, 2012

Secondary/Corners Coach Peter Giunta

Q: Corey was supposed to let him (A.J. Green) go?
A: Corey’s thing is, he should have realized what was going on as the veteran guy and trying to protect the other guys. Everybody is just being aggressive and trying to make plays, instead of doing what they’re supposed to do. He should have just been a little more patient and waited for the other guys to get there to execute their responsibilities. That wasn’t a case of completely, “Hey, we miscommunicated.” We communicated, but guys are being so aggressive, really playing the game, trying to get in there to make a play, that it opened up the big play. It was a major play.

Q: When you’ve given up the most touchdown passes of over 25 yards, what is the cause? Consistency? Do you see communication breakdowns?
A: It’s a little bit consistency wise. Some of it is tackling, like the one that got out against Pittsburgh. Sometimes, the ball is being thrown over 25 yards down the field. Sometimes, we have to get up and tackle better. It’s a multitude of things. It’s not just one thing as the reason that that happens. When we studied it last year, we found out that we gave up a lot of big plays over 25 yards. Yet, when the ball is in the air over 25 yards, we were one of the better teams in the league in stopping those kinds of throws. Part of it is making plays on the ball down the field on the deep throws. The other part of it is making tackles when we should.

Q: Is that frustrating that guys aren’t making those tackles or preventing those plays? It doesn’t seem like there is a lack of talent in the secondary.
A: It is. That’s the big thing. In this league, you have to make plays. Players have to make plays and we as coaches have to put them in position to make plays. It’s a little frustrating for them and for us that we’ve been in position where we haven’t made plays that we’re capable of making right now.

Q: How would you evaluate Corey Webster’s play this season?
A: He was banged up early. He’s starting to come on. He’s been able to practice full-time. He’s starting to come back into his own as a player. The one play we were talking about, he was trying to hold things off and do what he’s supposed to do. He reacts the way he’s supposed to react, but just as a veteran, you have to hold off, hold off, hold off and ball react better. He’s coming on. He’s healthy now, he’s able to go. Give him credit. He played through all the nicks and bangs and stuff. He had the broken hand, the different injuries he had. He did a good job of fighting through all of that stuff and not being able to practice every day.

Q: Hosley has gone through this rough stretch. If he just tackled the guy (Andrew Hawkins), it’s not a touchdown. What are the things you have to keep harping on him to make sure that he doesn’t get too down on himself or think too much about the mistakes?
A: He’s a pretty resilient player. The big thing is you correct and point out what you can do better to prevent those plays from happening in the future. To his credit, he’s not a repeat offender. He corrects what he does wrong and he goes on and does better the next time out. A lot of these things are new experiences to him. Playing with a little better leverage. In college football, if you’re close on a guy, the quarterback won’t try to fit it in there. In this league, if you’re inside, the quarterback will put it on the outside number. He was in decent shape. If you play better outside leverage on that play, he would have had the chance at the interception. He went for the interception, tripped over the guy’s feet, and lost his balance. If he keeps his feet, maybe he makes a play on the ball. If you’re in doubt, you always make the proper decision to get us off the field and give us a chance to make them kick a field goal.

Q: Prince is finally getting a bunch of games in a row where he’s getting a lot of playing time. How would you gauge his progress now that he’s getting consistent playing time on the field?
A: He’s making a lot of progress. He was very productive in this past game. Making a lot of tackles, he’s been very tight in his coverage, two balls we thought he could have gotten, he had his hands on, just didn’t finish the play. He’s learning from what he’s done well and what he hasn’t done as well and corrected those things. He’s making progress every week. I’m very pleased with the way he’s starting to play.
