Stevie Brown adds two more INTs to total

Posted Dec 9, 2012

Safety Stevie Brown's career year continued Sunday as he picked off QB Drew Brees twice in the Giants' Week 14 win

Now playing on his fourth team in three years, Stevie Brown was just looking for the right place.

He has found the perfect landing spot with the Giants.

The third-year safety notched his sixth and seventh interceptions on Sunday against the Saints and Drew Brees, who entered the game 4-0 lifetime against the Giants with 11 touchdowns and zero picks. Brown’s second of the night came early in the fourth quarter just as the Saints were beginning to shift momentum back to their sideline. On first-and-20 from the Giants 31, Brown jumped in front of a pass intended for tight end Jimmy Graham inside the 10 and took it 70 yards in the other direction.

Seeing their 22-point lead potentially diminish back to a one-possession advantage, the Giants stopped that idea right then and there. Brown’s second interception would eventually lead to a Lawrence Tynes field goal, giving the Giants a 45-27 advantage at the time.

“He was in position again, the one he picked in the fourth quarter, boy was that timing right,” Tom Coughlin said. “They had flipped the momentum on us almost completely. We weren’t doing much about it at that time. But thank goodness he makes that play and we end up kicking a field goal.”

In addition to his 70-yard return, Brown took his first interception back 21 yards, upping his interception return yardage on the season to 259. That was good enough to break the franchise record of 251 held by Hall of Famer Emlen Tunnell (1949) and Dick Lynch (1963).

Brown also forced a fumble (along with fellow safety Will Hill) on the Saints’ first drive and racked up eight tackles (seven solo). Brown and the rest of the Giants hope the 52-27 victory over New Orleans is just the beginning of a successful late-season push.

“We need to come out there and make sure we’re always physical,” Brown said. “And make sure that we’re always trying to go out there and get the ball, create turnovers and things like that. So, it was definitely a start.”
