After flying out of the gate with big numbers for his new team, tight end Martellus Bennett
had been quieted in the previous three games heading into Sunday.
He had just four catches in that span for 41 yards, including one catch for two yards in Philadelphia and another for nine in San Francisco. That came after Bennett posted 14 catches for 185 yards and scored in each of the first three weeks of the season
Against a division opponent in front of the home crowd was as good a time as any to get back on track.
And he did.
Bennett hauled in five Eli Manning
passes for a season-high 79 yards (15.8 average). Despite not finding the end zone, Bennett helped convert three third downs, including a 31-yard grab late in the first quarter that ultimately led to Andre Brown
’s one-yard touchdown run.
With Hakeem Nicks
getting healthier, Manning had all his targets in action in the win over Washington.
“It’s huge for us. Anytime those guys are healthy, it’s definitely great,” Victor Cruz
said of Bennett and Nicks. “Especially Hakeem, a guy who’s been battling some injuries the last couple weeks, it was good to see him out there and he was catching the football well. Martellus hasn’t been having his type of grabs the past couple weeks, but he knew his time would come and when we need him, he definitely comes to play so today was one of those days and he really performed for us. They both did.”
