Notes and statistics from the Giants’ 41-34 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
*The Giants improved to 1-1 heading into their game Thursday night in Charlotte against the Carolina Panthers.
*The Giants trailed in the third quarter, 27-13. This was the first time they won a game in which they trailed by at least 14 points at any point in the second half since Sept. 23, 2007 at
*The Giants trailed after three quarters, 27-16. The last time they won a regular season game in which they trailed entering the fourth quarter was Oct. 30, 2011 vs. Miami, when they overcame a 17-10 deficit to win, 20-17. The Giants had lost their previous five regular-season games in which they trailed after three quarters. They did, however, win both the NFC Championship Game and Super Bowl XLVI when they were behind entering the fourth quarter.
*The Giants’ 25-point fourth quarter was their highest point total in any quarter since scoring 27 in the fourth at
*The Giants gained 604 total yards vs. Tampa Bay. That is the second-highest total in franchise history. The franchise record of 609 yards was set on Dec. 3, 1950 in a 51-7 victory over the New York Yanks. It was the third 600-yard game in Giants history; they gained 602 yards in a 49-34 victory over Washington on Oct. 28, 1962.
*The Giants’ 510 net passing yards were a franchise record. The previous record of 505 yards was set in that 1962 game vs. Washington. Those are the only two 500-yard passing games in Giants history.
Manning’s regular-season career high is 53 passes at Seattle on Nov. 27, 2005 and vs. Washington on Dec. 16, 2007.
*Manning’s 51 passes increased his career total to 4,004. He is the second Giants quarterback to throw at least 4,000 passes. Phil Simms holds the franchise record with 4,647 passes.
*Manning’s 510 yards were the second-highest total by a quarterback in Giants history. Simms threw for 513 yards at Cincinnati on Oct. 13, 1985. Y.A. Tittle’s 505-yard game vs. Washington on Oct. 28, 1962 is the only other 500-yard passing game by a quarterback in Giants history.
Manning’s previous career high was 420 yards vs. Seattle on Oct. 9, 2011.
*The 510-yard outing was Manning’s 23rd career 300-yard game. The Giants are 12-11 in regular season games in which Manning throws for at least 300 yards.
*Manning increased his career passing yardage total to 28,302 and passed Craig Morton (27,908), Ken Stabler (27,938), Terry Bradshaw (27,989) and Ron Jaworski (28,190) to move into 45th place on the NFL’s all-time list. Tittle is in 44th place with 28,339 yards.
*Manning’s 31 completions tied for the third-highest total of his career. He had a 34-completon game vs. Tennessee on Sept. 26, 2010, he’s had two 33-completion games and this was his third 31-completion game.
*Manning’s 80-yard touchdown pass to Cruz was the fourth-longest pass of his career. The longest, of course, was the 99-yarder to the same receiver last Dec. 24 at the Jets.
*Manning threw 51 times without being sacked. His previous high total of passes without getting sacked was 48 vs. Dallas on Nov. 14. 2010. The Giants have won the last seven games in which they did not allow a sack.
*This was the 21st time Manning has rallied the Giants from a fourth-quarter deficit or tie to win a regular season game.
*The Giants’ 31 first downs were their highest total in a regular season game since Sept. 24, 1995 in a victory over New Orleans. They also had 31 first downs in the 2000 NFC Championship Game victory over Minnesota.
*According to the NFL, Manning, Cruz and Nicks joined three Hall of Famers – quarterback Norm Van Brocklin and receivers Elroy (Crazy Legs) Hirsh and Tom Fears of the 1951 Los Angeles Rams - as the only teammates in history with 500 passing yards, plus two receivers with at least 150 yards, in the same game. The Rams’ trio accomplished the feat on Sept. 28, 1951 vs. – ironically – the New York Yanks.
*This was the second time in their history the Giants had two receivers with at least 10 catches in the same game. On Sept. 20, 2009 at Dallas, Mario Manningham had 10 receptions for 150 yards and a touchdown and Steve Smith had 10 catches for 134 yards and a score.
*Nicks’ 199 receiving yards were the sixth-highest in franchise history and the most by a Giants receiver since Plaxico Burress had 204 yards vs.
*Cruz’s 11 catches were a career high. His previous regular-season high was nine receptions on Nov. 28, 2011 at New Orleans. He had 10 catches in the NFC Championship Game at San Francisco on Jan. 22.
*Nicks’ career-high is 12 receptions at Houston on Oct. 10, 2010. He caught 10 passes at Arizona on Oct. 2, 2011.
*Nicks increased his career total to 216 receptions and moved past Homer Jones (214) and into 19th place on the Giants’ career list. Cruz has 99 career catches.
*This was the first time the Giants had two receivers with at least 100 yards in the same game since Oct. 25, 2010 at Dallas, where Nicks gained 108 yards on nine catches and Smith added 101 yards on nine receptions.
*Tom Coughlin’s 143rd regular season victory moved him into a tie with Hall of Famer Marv
Levy for 18th place on the NFL’s career list.
*Manning’s first pass of the second quarter was intercepted by linebacker Mason Foster. It ended Manning’s streak of 76 consecutive regular season passes without a pick. He had last been intercepted in the regular season last Dec. 24 vs. the Jets.
