Eisen's Mailbag: Pass Rushers

Everyone is getting on our edge pass rushers. I felt that the problem with our pass rush was that our tackles didn't have a good year. We didn't get the push up the middle and we didn't stop the run well. Marvin Austin wasn't a factor, Chris Canty was hurt most of the season, we lost (Markus) Kuhn early, Rocky (Bernard) wasn't as strong as last year and Linval (Joseph) wasn't consistent enough. I feel we need a big body in the middle a guy like Fred Robins or Barry Cofield. What are your thoughts on this?

I think you make some good points. Certainly the outside rushers would have benefitted if the tackles had provided more inside pressure. But Joseph, Canty and Bernard did combine for 8.0 sacks, which was actually two more sacks than that threesome combined for in 2011 (though Dave Tollefson had 5.0 sacks that year). Canty missed the early part of the season and had to play his way back into top condition. If he is healthy next season, that will be a big boost for the middle of the line. I think Joseph might have worn down a little at the end of the season. Kuhn showed some flashes. But the player that needs to step up is Austin, who has not played up to his status as a second-round draft choice. In fairness, he returned to the field this season after missing two full years. So let’s consider this a redshirt year and hopes he takes a big leap forward next season. But the Giants will certainly check out the free agent tackles.
