The design was created after several meetings that included team president John Mara, chairman Steve Tisch, general manager Jerry Reese, head coach Tom Coughlin and a four-player committee of Eli Manning, Michael Strahan, Amani Toomer and Shaun O'Hara and representatives from Tiffany. The players had great participation in the design process.
"I think as players we went and thought that we were there as a token invitation, but they really wanted our input," O'Hara said.
The ring's top is covered in diamonds and features three Super Bowl trophies accented with marquise diamonds signifying the team's Super Bowl XXI, XXV and XLII victories, along with the team's "NY" logo in bead set round diamonds. "World Champions" is emblazoned in raised letters on the top and bottom bezel, with channel set diamonds on left and right bezel.
The ring's shanks celebrate the Giants' storybook season leading up to Super Bowl Sunday. "Eleven Straight on the Road," an NFL record; the NFL shield; player name, along with player number in raised letters appear on one shank; and the final score (NYG 17 NE 14), "Super Bowl XLII," date (02.03.08) and 'AZ' appear on the other shank.
Tiffany & Co. previously created Super Bowl championship rings for the Washington Redskins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tiffany annually creates the NFL Vince Lombardi Super Bowl Trophy at its hollowware workshop in nearby Parsippany, N. J.
"It is Tiffany's privilege to partner with the NFL in the creation of the Vince Lombardi Trophy and its annual presentation on Super Bowl Sunday," said Michael J. Kowalski, chairman and CEO of Tiffany & Co. "Every trophy represents a hard-fought season capped by the ultimate win, but Super Bowl XLII has special significance. Not only was it one of the greatest games ever played, it was won by our hometown team, the New York Giants, whom we now salute with a commemorative ring and our thanks for a performance on the field that no Giants fan, or football fan anywhere, will ever forget."
The final design includes elements that were important to the players' representatives.
"The important thing for me was the three Lombardi Trophies signifying the three Super Bowl championships of the Giants," O'Hara said. "Obviously, I like the fact that the 'NY' logo is right front and center, and that and the Lombardi Trophies are the first thing you see. The other thing that I like is that on the side of the ring it says, '11 Straight on the Road.' That is something that we were able to accomplish, and I don't think we really realized until the season was over how big of a deal that was. That was something that was very crucial to our season. That really did become our battle cry. People had dubbed us the road warriors and all sorts of other things, but it is something that we are really proud of and I think we are going to be happy to have that on the ring."
Soon after the Giants' Super Bowl victory, Strahan said he wanted a "10-table ring." When he walked into a restaurant, he wanted a ring that could be seen 10 tables away. O'Hara concurred that the ring should be sizeable.
"There was some discussion about maybe one of the rings was too big," O'Hara said. "I threw out the fact that it was a big win, it was a huge win, so the ring should be designed accordingly. Michael said it best when he said he wanted a 10-table ring. I think everybody is going to be very pleased with the design. It is very clean, very classy, but at the same time it is very strong."
The Super Bowl XLII Championship ring will be presented to the Giants players and coaches at a ceremony later in the spring.
