EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ
- When the Giants designated Brandon Jacobs as their franchise player on Feb. 12, both sides said the move would help them reach agreement on a long-term contract.

The Giants signed RB Brandon Jacobs to a four-year contract through the 2010 season

They were correct.

The Giants announced this evening that Jacobs, a two-time 1,000-yard rusher, has signed a four-year contract through the 2012 season.

"Both parties are happy to get a long-term deal done," general manager Jerry Reese said. "Now Brandon can totally concentrate on the offseason program and get himself ready to go this fall."

Though he could have become a free agent, Jacobs was adamant that he wanted to remain a Giant.

"I was confident all along that this was going to get done - I didn't panic one bit," Jacobs said. "I know the reason we did it the way we did; I knew I was going to be here. I was super-confident and I am here. I'm happy about it.

"This team is full of young talent. We brought some great talent in here the last two years and those guys are still learning and getting better. Our offensive line is great and will continue to be great. There are a lot of young guys on our team that are still playing great, great football. I'm looking for big things out of our football team next year."

Jacobs had his finest professional season in 2008, despite missing three games with a knee injury. He rushed for a career-high 1,089 yards after running for 1,009 yards in 2007 to become the fourth running back in Giants history to run for at least 1,000 yards in at least two consecutive seasons. The others were Joe Morris (1985-86), Rodney Hampton (1991-95) and Tiki Barber (2002-2006).

Jacobs and Derrick Ward (1,025 yards) became the fourth pair of running backs from the same team - and the fifth set of teammates - to run for at least 1,000 yards in the same season.

Jacobs rushed for 15 touchdowns in 2008 and is just the second player in Giants history to rush for at least 15 touchdowns in a season. Joe Morris ran for a team-record 21 scores in 1985.
