East Rutherford, NJ -The New York Giants have selected Mr. Bobby Acosta of Monmouth Regional High School (Tinton Falls, NJ) as "The Lou Rettino High School Football Coach of the Week" for the week of September 25, 2006. Monmouth Regional (3-0) had not defeated Wall High School (1-2) since 1990 and had lost 9 consecutive games against them before Friday night's 26-21 victory.
In recognition of Coach Acosta's success and commitment, he will receive a certificate of recognition signed by the NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, NFL Director of Football Operations Gene Washington, and the Giants Head Coach Tom Coughlin. A $1,000 check will be granted to the Monmouth Regional High School football program. Coach Acosta will be acknowledged by a stadium announcement when the Giants host the Washington Redskins on October 8th. An announcement will also be posted on the Giants web site, www.giants.com.
The Lou Rettino High School Football Coach of the Week Award, started in 1996, is part of the Giants' continuing effort to promote youth football. The Giants elected to name the award in memory of former Union High School (NJ) coach, Lou Rettino, for his fine commitment to the game of football, his community and the betterment of his athletes' lives.
Each week during the 2006 high school football season, the Giants will select one area high school head coach as the Coach of the Week winner. The selection is based on the coach's continuing commitment towards promoting youth football, developing motivated student-athletes and his overall community involvement. At the conclusion of the 2006 season, the Giants will choose a Coach of the Year. That coach will receive $2,000 for their school's football program.
Monmouth's victory over Wall was the biggest win of Coach Acosta's coaching career. Prior to that game, Monmouth had lost 9 consecutive games against Wall, by an average of almost 30 points per game. This time, however, Monmouth capitalized on back to back Wall turnovers to score three touchdowns in 4 minutes, securing a 26-21 victory and remaining undefeated.
Coach Acosta is in his first season as Head Coach of Monmouth Regional High School and has led the team to an impressive 3-0 start. Before becoming Head Coach of Monmouth, he was an assistant coach at Rowan University (2000), Head Coach of Marlboro High School (2001-2002), assistant coach at Brick Township High School (2003- 2005), and Wide Receivers coach at The College of New Jersey (2005). Acosta is a 2000 graduate of Rowan University, where he played four years of football, making four Division III championship appearances.
