Joe Collins
Executive Scout

Biography

Joe Collins joined the Giants as a scout in March, 2002 and was promoted to Executive Scout in 2007. He has more than 40 years of experience in coaching and scouting.

Collins came to the Giants from the Cleveland Browns, where he was the club’s Executive Director of Player Personnel from 1999-01. In Cleveland, he was responsible for the Browns’ pro and college personnel departments.

Collins was the San Francisco 49ers’ Coordinator of Pro Personnel from 1995-99.  Prior to moving to San Francisco, Collins spent 16 years as a scout for the Jets.

Collins began his coaching career in 1973 as an assistant at Xavier University in Cincinnati. He then moved to Central State (Ohio) as the offensive coordinator from 1974-76. Collins also coached at North Carolina A&T University in 1977 and Western Illinois University in 1978.

He began his scouting career with the BLESTO scouting combine in 1979. The following year, he joined the Jets and for 16 years he evaluated players across the country while learning from personnel experts such as Dick Steinberg, Ron Wolf and Dick Haley.

During his playing career, Collins was an outstanding safety at the University of South Dakota (1965-68), where he set the school record for interceptions. He graduated in 1969 with a degree in accounting and business management.

Collins was born in Detroit, where his father, Rip, served for many years as the visiting clubhouse man in Tiger Stadium. He recently donated several items collected by his father to the Baseball Hall of Fame, including the famous Hank Greenberg first baseman’s mitt, used by the Hall of Famer in the 1930s.

Collins and his wife, Sue, have four children and six grandchildren and reside in Amelia Island, Fla.
