East Rutherford, NJ – The New York Giants and Gatorade have selected Mr. Rich Seubert of Watchung Hills High School (Warren, NJ) as the Lou Rettino High School Coach of the Week for Week 2 of the 2019 season. Seubert’s Warriors defeated Plainfield 35-12 on Friday, and are now 2-0 this season after a winless 2018 season.
The Lou Rettino High School Football Coach of the Week Award is part of the Giants’ continuing effort to support local youth football programs. The Giants elected to name the award in memory of former Union High School (NJ) coach, Lou Rettino, for his fine commitment to the game of football, his community and the betterment of his athletes’ lives. Each week during the high school football season, the Giants selected one area high school head coach as the Coach of the Week winner. The selection is based on the coach’s continuing commitment towards promoting youth football, developing motivated student-athletes and his overall community involvement.
In recognition of Coach Seubert’s selection as Coach of the Week, a $2,000 check will be granted to the school’s football program from The Giants Foundation and Gatorade. He will also receive a certificate of recognition signed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Giants head coach Pat Shurmur. Coach Seubert’s honor will be acknowledged with an in-stadium announcement when the Giants host Washington on September 29th. All 2019 Coach of the Week honorees and the 2019 Coach of the Year will also be invited to attend a dinner hosted by the Giants at MetLife Stadium in the Spring, and will be invited with their teams to a Giants preseason game in 2020.
Rich Seubert is in his fourth season as head coach of the Watchung Hills Warriors. After joining the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent offensive lineman in 2001, Seubert went on to become a starting member for the team. He played his entire ten year career with the Giants from 2001 to 2010, including starting at left guard for the 2007 Super Bowl championship team.
“Since taking over as head coach of our football program, Rich Seubert has been a respected and invaluable member of the Watchung Hills Regional High School athletic department,” said Daniel Root, Director of Athletics at Watchung Hills Regional High School. In addition to instilling the importance of building a team with solidarity as its foundation, he has implemented many of our district's core values to encourage our student-athletes to represent themselves as successful leaders in the classroom, on the field and in the community. His passion for the game and his commitment to our school community has resulted in great pride and progress for our team. We are very proud of Coach Seubert and the entire Warrior football program.”
