Versatile running back Shane Vereen, who has missed the last nine games with a triceps injury, was activated off injured reserve/designated for return. He will be in uniform tomorrow when the 8-4 Giants host the 11-1 Dallas Cowboys. The Giants have four games remaining. They host Detroit next week before traveling to Philadelphia and Washington for their final two games.

To make room on their roster, the Giants waived offensive lineman Adam Gettis.

Vereen, a six-year veteran and second-year Giant, tore his triceps on Sept 25 against Washington. He was placed on injured reserve two days later and underwent surgery. Each NFL team is permitted to activate one player off injured reserve during the season.

Vereen made his first Giants start in place of the injured Rashad Jennings vs. Washington. He rushed for 67 yards – including a 25-yarder and a 1-yard touchdown – on 11 carries, and caught two passes for 28 yards. His totals for the first three games were 31 carries for 147 yards (4.7-yard average), and eight receptions for 75 yards.

In 2015, his first with the Giants, Vereen played in all 16 games and finished second on the team in rushing (260 yards on 61 carries), and receiving (59 catches for 494 yards and four touchdowns). The three receiving totals were all career highs.

Vereen is expected to boost a Giants offense that ranks 26th overall (327.4 yards a game) and 31st in rushing yards (77.5 per game). In addition, Vereen is one of the NFL's best third-down backs. The Giants rank 27th in the NFL on third downs, converting only 35.1% of their opportunities (53 of 151). Vereen can catch the ball and turn a short pass into a long gain, or take a handoff or pitch and step through a defense.

Vereen spent his first four seasons with the New England Patriots. He set a Super Bowl record for receptions by a running back with 11 in the Patriots' victory over Seattle in Super Bowl XLIX.

Gettis played in three games this season, and started at left guard two weeks ago in the Giants' victory in Cleveland. He is one of four players to start at left guard for the Giants this year. Gettis was on the practice squad for the season's first two months.
