Sterling Shepard Blog: Back in the end zone

Throughout the season, Rookie WR Sterling Shepard will check in with Giants.com and provide an inside look at his journey of making it in the NFL:

*Wide receiver Sterling Shepard was born to play football. The son of a Super Bowl and NCAA champion, he followed in his father's footsteps to a standout career at the University of Oklahoma before being selected by the New York Giants in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft. We pick up with him after the Giants' third-straight victory, a game in which Shepard caught one of Eli Manning's four touchdown passes… *

I think the main thing against the Eagles was we were just getting open and doing our part. The line protected very well, so Eli was able to spread the ball around. He had a lot of time. It was just, all in all, a good day for our offense.

On my touchdown, it was kind of a physical play. I don't want to give it away, but I went inside, I kind of got grabbed a little bit, got him off me, and then I was able to go high. Eli had a lot time, like I said. The line did a great job, especially on that play, and he was able to find me.

Oh man, it had been a while since I last got into the end zone. It had been a few weeks. So I was happy to get back in there. You've just got to be patient. It can be frustrating at times, but it feels good to get back in there.

We have a new saying in the wide receiver room on a play like that. We call it the "dumb way." It's from Webbie, a rapper, that's his saying. He goes the "dumb way," which means he goes hard. So if somebody does something cold, you'd be like, "He just went the dumb way right there." I just started saying that, and all us receivers just all started saying it. So Roger was saying that to me after the score.

Roger, that's my brother right there. I'm happy for him. I love when all my guys get in the end zone. We've all worked together, we've all grinded together, so it's always good to see it pay off. I love seeing a big play work out, and it's one of my guys. We're such a close group. I think that's the reason why we're all just so happy to see each other succeed. We're all pushing to go over 100, two touchdowns apiece. So it's just great seeing guys get open and having some fun.

After the game, we went over to Cruz's birthday party in NYC, and it was O's birthday too. We had fun. It was a great time. Everything about it was just Grade A. Everything Vic puts together is just done with class. From the D.J. to all the people that were there, it was all around a great night. I got to meet a couple celebrities -- besides Vic.

With being a wide receiver in this area, he's taught me just to stay the course and stay humble. He says that a lot of stuff is going to come at you, come your way, especially with more success, so just stay humble. Stay true to yourself. That's some of the biggest advice he's given me and kind of sticks with me.

So it's definitely an exciting time, and we've just to keep this ball rolling this week against the Bengals. They're another physical group of guys that like to get their hands on you, so you've just got to be physical. That's the main thing. The road doesn't get any easier for us throughout the rest of the season. But it is nice having this homestand, especially after that London trip. I like being here at home, especially in front of our fans. It's always good to be home.
