Eisen's Mailbag: Expectations for Brandon Marshall

Posted Apr 11, 2017

Michael Eisen answers your questions on today’s edition of The Mailbag on Giants.com:

• What should Giants fans realistically expect from Brandon Marshall this year?

In the three seasons since he turned 30, Marshall has had 61, 109 and 59 receptions for 721, 1,502 and 788 yards, and scored eight, 14 and three touchdowns. Obviously, the middle numbers are vastly superior, but for arguments sake, let’s look at the averages: 76.3 catches, 1,004 yards, and 8.3 touchdowns. But this year he’ll benefit from having Eli Manning, the best quarterback he’s ever played with, throwing to him. And Odell Beckham, Jr. and Sterling Shepard commanding the attention of defensive backs. So it’s not unreasonable to expect that Marshall will post numbers that exceed the above averages.

• Bringing back Keenan Robinson was a very underrated move made by the Giants this offseason. How important was he to the defense’s huge improvement last year?

Very important. Robinson proved to be a talented, versatile and durable player who produced consistently throughout the season. He could come up and stop a back at the line of scrimmage, and cover a linebacker down the field. Robinson wasn’t an All-Pro, but if the NFL had an all-glue team – unsung players who help keep their units together – he’d be on it.

• What second-year player is most likely to have a breakout campaign like Landon Collins did in 2016?

Linebacker B.J. Goodson. I’m not saying he’s going to be a first-team All-Pro, as Collins was. But Goodson should play much more on defense this season, and he has the skills and instincts to be a productive player. Runner-up: safety Darian Thompson, who lost most of his rookie season to injury. He quickly earned a spot in the starting lineup last spring and if he can stay healthy, Thompson should team with Collins to give the Giants a terrific safety tandem.
