Giants.com's Dan Salomone highlights five takeaways from Sunday's press conferences:

CB ELI APPLE

After giving up a few big plays on Saturday, the secondary buckled down before the players have a day off tomorrow and competed like the group that allowed just 15 passing touchdowns last season, the second-fewest in the NFL. Second-year cornerback Eli Apple led the way, breaking up a pair of long attempts from Eli Manning, the first to Tavarres King and the other to Sterling Shepard.

That made back-to-back strong outings for Apple after last year's first-round draft pick broke up two close-range attempts to Shepard and Odell Beckham Jr. in the end zone on Saturday.

TE EVAN ENGRAM

Engram, this year's first-round draft pick, got on the board with a touchdown from Manning today. He also scattered a handful of other receptions throughout the day, but everyone knows his skills as a receiver. Blocking is where he wants to prove himself, and he'll be put to the test this week when the pads come on. After a break on Monday, players will return to the field on Tuesday with the shoulder pads.

SAFETY LANDON COLLINS

The first-team All-Pro isn't resting on his laurels. Collins was flying around again today, and while he didn't quite seal the deal, he came close to a pair of interceptions. They'll go down as two passes defensed, of which he had 13 in his breakout season, including five interceptions. Fellow safety Nat Berhe, who is competing to start next to Collins, did get an interception on a tipped pass late in practice.

Honorable mention: Wide receiver Brandon Marshall, like he did yesterday, started with a catch on the first play of practice; Dwayne Harris, who made the Pro Bowl as a special teamer last season, showed his skills as a receiver with a nifty one-handed catch; tight end Will Tye caught a short touchdown from Manning; Josh Johnson and wide receiver Roger Lewis hooked up for a big play down the sideline.
