The wide receiver corps became the story of the day when second-year pro Sterling Shepard went down early in practice after rolling his ankle while making a cut on a pass route. That meant everyone moved up a spot in the pecking order, and Darius Powe made the most of it, hauling in a handful of catches throughout the day. Even before Shepard's injury, Powe had been making plays the last few days in training camp.

"I think a handful of guys responded well to the reps," McAdoo said when asked about Powe, a Cal product who played on the Giants' practice squad last year. "We completed some balls today from an offensive perspective, so that was encouraging."

It wasn't a long one, but Odell Beckham Jr. made the play of the day. From inside the 10-yard line, quarterback Eli Manning threaded a pass between Eli Apple and an oncoming B.J. Goodson to find Beckham right at the goal line for a touchdown. Great throw. Great catch. Play of the day.

It was one of those spirited – yeah, that's the word – practices today at training camp. With the rising temperatures and players putting the full pads on for the first time, there were some physical plays out there at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center. B.J. Goodson definitely brought the wood, and that's what Giants fans are happy to see from their middle linebacker.

"It's just a lot of tension going on just with the pads being on and today was the first day with full pads," Apple said. "B.J. Goodson has been, I think, the most impressive guy so far in practices because he's just been the most physical, and I just love that and it's really been setting the tempo for our defense."

Honorable mention: Cornerback Janoris Jenkins intercepted a pass intended for wide receiver Tavarres King during one-on-one drills…In that same period, safety Eric Pinkins made a nice play on a ball for tight end Will Tye…Cornerback Donte Deayon also broke up a pass from Josh Johnson to rookie tight end Evan Engram.
