What We Learned: Bond growing between Arvell Reese & Tremaine Edmunds

ARVELL-REESE

Following yesterday's walk-through practice, the Giants were back at it Friday for their ninth and penultimate training camp session in West Virginia.

The Giants will wrap things up on Saturday with practice beginning at 10 a.m. The team will then fly home tomorrow afternoon before enjoying an off day on Sunday. Then practices resume at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center on Monday as preparations for the preseason opener begin.

"One more day," coach John Harbaugh said as he concluded his Friday press conference. "I want to finish strong, but I would say, I told the guys at the beginning of the week, that you're going to look back after Saturday's practice, and you're going to see how far you've come, how much better you are, how much different you are as a team. And I'm hopeful that they'll feel that way after tomorrow's practice and I think they will."

In addition to the head coach, the team's top three picks from this year's draft – linebacker Arvell Reese, offensive lineman Francis "Sisi" Mauigoa, and cornerback Colton Hood – also spoke to the media.

Here is what we learned.

Reese: Having Edmunds 'helps a lot'

A lot has been made about the Giants' two new starting inside linebackers. Tremaine Edmunds and Arvell Reese have been all over the place dating back to the spring when they first took the practice field alongside each other. Their production has only increased since the pads came on earlier this week. When speaking to the media Friday, Reese praised the veteran for everything he has already done for the 20-year-old.

"I think having 'Maine helps a lot," the rookie linebacker said. "Just what he has done in the league already. He's about nine years in. He's proven. Like you said, he's a vet. Just being able to learn from him and grow next to him. He's a great player, a great leader."

While only 28 years old, Edmunds already has 119 NFL games under his belt, compared to zero for Reese. But according to Reese, it's a two-way street when it comes to the linebackers helping each other out on the field.

"Honestly, we kind of go back and forth," Reese told the media. "We go back and forth. When we're on the field, we talk a lot. We go back and forth with a lot of stuff. We're always reminding each other what we might got. So, it's a lot of bouncing it off each other. But definitely, when it comes to off-the-field stuff and just routine and stuff like that, I'm always asking him stuff."

Rookies discuss first NFL training camp

The Giants' rookie class took the field with the rest of the team for the very first time in the middle of the offseason workout program. While those spring practices certainly gave the first-year players a taste of the NFL, the non-contact sessions with no pads are not exactly the same as these summer practices have been.

"I think everything's a little bit faster here," Arvell Reese said about his first NFL training camp. "I think everything's a little bit faster. Harbs does a good job of running camp though."

Of course, coming from a powerhouse college program like Ohio State, Reese made sure to later add, "Everything's kind of the same. Camp is camp."

"I think it's been good," Colton Hood said about his training camp experience. "I'm learning a lot from the veterans. Just getting up to speed with the playbook and everything. It's been a good camp. I've learned a lot and I'm going to continue to learn."

Hood has been mixed in with the starting defense at times over the last 10 days and has made some strong plays, which he credits to improvements he's been able to make on the mental side of the game.

"It's just coming in and learning every day," Colton Hood said when asked how he's improved this summer. "Just getting used to different splits from the NFL field. Just those little things. The mental part of the game, because I have the physical tools. So, definitely that."

Updates from training camp

Following practice, Harbaugh provided injury updates on a few players.

RB Cam Skattebo - "Skatt, I think it's natural. He's probably working through the football shape part of it. He's coming off of rehab, so that's what that was. It won't be a serious injury at all."

OLB Brian Burns - "Burns is just working through his ankle, he's fine. He just mounted in his rush today."

C John Michael Schmitz - "John Michael, got a bell rung, so we'll see. We'll evaluate that."

Additionally, cornerback Jarrick Bernard-Converse was waived/injured on Friday.
