Giants interview Ravens' Joe Hortiz for GM

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Joe Hortiz today became the seventh candidate to interview for the Giants' vacant general manager position.

Hortiz spoke with president John Mara, chairman Steve Tisch and senior vice president of player personnel Chris Mara this morning by videoconference. The initial interviews with candidates are being conducted remotely.

Hortiz, 46, is completing his 24th season with the Baltimore Ravens and third as director of player personnel. He works closely with George Kokinis, the team's other director of player personnel, to oversee all aspects of college and pro scouting for Baltimore. The pair serve as general manager Eric DeCosta's chief personnel evaluators.

Hortiz spent 10 seasons (2009-18) as the Ravens' director of college scouting. He was responsible for all aspects of the college process, coordinating the schedules and cross-checking duties of the area and national scouts. Hortiz also managed the team's draft preparation and the evaluation and ranking process of hundreds of NFL draft-eligible prospects.

Hortiz joined the Baltimore organization 1998 and worked for three years with the pro and college scouting staffs as a football personnel assistant, helping both then general manager Ozzie Newsome and senior vice president of football administration Pat Moriarty, who manages the salary cap.

In 2001-02, Hortiz scouted the northeast, and he was the Ravens' southeast area scout, covering the SEC, ACC and C-USA, from 2003-05. He was promoted to national scout in 2006 and to the director of college scouting three years later.

Hortiz and his wife, Jennifer -- both graduates of Auburn University -- have four boys, Joey (14), Jack (13), Jameson (10) and Julian (8). While earning his B.S. in accounting from Auburn, Hortiz was an undergraduate assistant coach for Terry Bowden and the Tigers' football team from 1995-97. He worked with both the quarterbacks and wide receivers and coached the scout team linebackers and secondary.
