Coach Daboll Weekly Q&A

Presented by

Dabs' Digest: 1-on-1 with Coach Brian Daboll

BRIAN-DABOLL-PANINI

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Dabs' Digest, Giants.com's weekly conversation with head coach Brian Daboll.

Q: It's often said you can't overreact to Week 1, good or bad. Best thing to do is move on. You're moving on, obviously, after the loss to Dallas. But how do you move on while confronting the issues that cause the outcome in the first place?

DABOLL: "The same way you do it every week. Teach, then get on to the next opponent."

Q: Were you pleased with the energy and attention to detail at practice (Wednesday)?

DABOLL: "Yes, had a good day. I would expect (the players) to come back ready to work, get the scouting report, get the game plan, have good walk-throughs, go out there and practice hard, good communication in the classroom after practice, and then get ready for the next situations."

Q: You've made a point of saying that you're sticking to the process and it's important to remain consistent. Did you ever consider doing things differently just to make everyone know the Dallas game was unacceptable.

DABOLL: "We have a process that we believe in and that's our process. So, every week, you adjust processes, you have the core things you believe in every week. You make little adjustments, whether it's the game plan meeting time, game plan meetings. That's just consistency. Consistency is important in this league, for players, coaches and improvement is important. So, whatever we gotta do to improve, that's what we try to do."

Q: You mentioned that you slept poorly the night of the game. As a head coach, do you do more soul searching or do you feel a greater burden after a game like that?

DABOLL: "Usually after games, I don't sleep, win or lose. There's a lot of things that go through your mind as a head coach, decision making or going through it again. You watch the tape; it usually takes a long time to watch all three phases. Again, that's really the start of your next morning meeting, correction periods, coaches' meetings. There's a lot of things that go on whether you win, whether you lose, whether you tie."

Q: How much do you rely on your leaders and your captains?

DABOLL: "Rely on them every day, training camp, OTAs, games, that's why they're captains."

Q: Let's talk about the Cardinals, who you play Sunday in Arizona. Until they get (quarterback) Kyler Murray back, they're going to rely on their defense to stay in games. That's what happened last week in Washington, where they had six sacks, three takeaways and a defensive score. Except for (safety) Budda (Baker), they have no big names on the defense. What did you see watching their defense?

DABOLL: "I think they have a very sound system. Nick (Rallis) is the coordinator, they have a system that's been productive and they've done a really good job with that. I think the players know where to be, they play very fast, really on all three levels. Budda is someone that you have to be aware of. He's instinctive, he is a really, really good football player. They fly to the ball, they created turnovers in the first game, they scored on defense. So, this is a team that plays fast, aggressive. They do a good job."

Q: They rotated in 11 guys up front against Washington.

DABOLL: "And usually, those type of teams that have fast fronts, guys that get off on the ball, they try to keep them as fresh as they can be."

Q: Guys like (linebackers) Zaven Collins, Kyzir White, and Dennis Gardeck don't get much publicity. When you watch them on tape, what jumps out?

DABOLL: "Good football players, and this was their first game in that system with that organization and I thought they did a heck of a job."

Q: What makes Budda Baker stand out when you watch him?

DABOLL: "He's just an instinctive football player that can cover, he can tackle, cover the deep part of the field. He can play man-to-man, he's an instinctive football player that has a great nose for the ball, plays with great aggressiveness, speed. I think he's a heck of a player."

Q: They acquired (quarterback) Josh Dobbs in a trade on August 24. He practiced for two weeks, and then started the season opener.

DABOLL: "That's impressive for a quarterback to be able to do that. I know that (offensive coordinator) Drew Petzing came from Cleveland. For a quarterback, regardless if you know a little bit of the system, some of the system, to come in and be able to operate in a full game with however, checks, plays, runs, passes, all that stuff, that's not an easy thing to do now. He's been around for some time. He's been in different places. So, I think that's just a testament to him to be able to go out there and do that."

Q: Would you expect with another week of practice and a game under his belt that he'll be more proficient in the offense this week?

DABOLL: "I think time on task when you're in a system for a quarterback is always important, but he's been in this league a long time. He was a good college quarterback at Tennessee. He did a good job of keeping it close and, and being where they needed to be against Washington, so I got a lot of respect for him being able to go out there and do that with only being at a place for two weeks. Having coached quarterbacks and called plays, that's not an easy thing to do, so much respect."

Q: Did you go back and watch his two starts with the Titans at the end of last season to get a feel for him?

DABOLL: "You have got to go back and when in the early part of the season, in this case, maybe it's a little bit different because they got a quarterback so late, you go back, and you do your due diligence on the player. But, you got one preseason game and one regular season game for the coordinator, who's a new coordinator, so a lot of unknowns again, particularly in the early part of season. But this week as well, new staff, new coordinator, quarterback they've only had for two weeks, it's gonna be important how we play and execute our fundamentals and assignments."

Q: (James) Conner has been their bell cow in the rushing game for a while. He scored 22 touchdowns in the last two years. What kind of back is?

DABOLL: "He's got good power, vision. We're gonna have to do a good job of rallying to the ball and tackling him."

Q: (Tight end Zach) Ertz has been thorn in the Giants' side for a while.

DABOLL: "He's someone that Dobbs likes to go to; even in just one game, you can see him looking for him. I'd say a good friend for the quarterback to have is a tight end that has a good feel in the zone, has good vision, understands the inside part of the field, can create space for himself. I've known Zach for a little while. I got a lot of respect for him and how he goes about his business and what he's done in this league. He's definitely a guy that we have to be aware of."

Q: I know you were asked a similar question yesterday, but the day that the Cardinals traded (Isaiah) Simmons to us was the day that Dobbs was traded to them. So, he obviously doesn't know the quarterback, he was new in their system. Can he still help you with their personnel?

DABOLL: "Having been in the league for as long as I have, there are people that come and go every year. So, certainly you talk to someone whether it's a coach or a player or a staff member. But I don't think you get too deep into the weeds with it, because you don't want to start thinking about a million different things. Of course, you can ask about the players and the field surface and structure of the defense and things like that. And you do that with anybody, not just Isaiah just because he's new here, but with anybody that's from a different team that just comes into your system."

Q: This is a copycat league. You had a field goal blocked last week. Do you expect teams will try a similar tactic until you show that you fixed it?

DABOLL: "That's exactly right, copycat. Whether it's a punt return, whether it's a pressure you can't pick up, whether it's something on defense that you got hit on, you're gonna continue to get it until you show you can stop it."
