The Giants' first-round draft choice – who reported to training camp yesterday – suffered a fracture of the fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot. He will undergo surgery to have a screw inserted in the foot and be sidelined for an undetermined period.

Amukamara, the 19th overall draft selection from Nebraska, was participating in only his second practice. He left the field with a member of the Giants medical staff and X-rays subsequently revealed the fracture.

*The Giants were short of receivers for their practice this evening, which was held in the field house at the Timex Performance Center because of rain.

Starter Mario Manningham sat out with a sore ankle. Devin Thomas, who dislocated his finger yesterday, and Domenik Hixon, who rested his surgically-repaired knee, did not participate. And Ramses Barden (ankle) remains on the physically unable to perform list.

Victor Cruz took most of the first-team snaps opposite Hakeem Nicks. Cruz took advantage of the opportunity, making a nice diving catch on a quick out and later hauling in a long pass from Eli Manning. Darius Reynaud and Michael Clayton also lined up with the starters and Reynaud was most often the extra wideout in three-receiver packages.

*Rookie safety Tyler Sash had the biggest hit in the full-pads practice, sending fullback Henry Hynoski, another newcomer, to the ground on a run play. Sash, a sixth-round draft choice from Iowa, later broke up Ryan Perrilloux's long pass to Clayton.

*Tight end Ben Patrick, who joined the team on Monday and was thought to be a candidate for playing time after Kevin Boss signed with Oakland, decided he no longer wants to play football and was placed on the reserve/retired list.

*Also missing practice were linebackers Clint Sintim (knee) and Spencer Paysinger (groin) and safeties Brian Jackson (back) and Cary Harris (shoulder).
