Eisen's Mailbag: Kick return vs. Punt Return

I've read that Quintin Demps will probably be the kickoff returner and Trindon Holliday the punt returner. Why wouldn't the Giants pick the best returner and have him do both? They seem to require the same skill set.
-John

Dear John:
Actually, the skill sets are different. It's easier to catch a kickoff than a punt. That's why many coaches, including Tom Coughlin, consider simply catching and securing the football by far the most important duty of a punt returner. That's why Rueben Randle returned punts the last two seasons and why he might do it again. He takes care of the football. On kickoff returns, the Giants ideally would like to have someone who can give them a better starting field position. Demps and Holliday, as well as Odell Beckham Jr. and David Wilson, should all be in the competition to be that player.

Do you think that the Giants will sign Jermichael Finley? I feel kind of nervous going into a season without a proven tight end. What do you think?
-Michael

Dear Michael
I can't imagine what we would do without our weekly tight end question. I very strongly doubt the Giants will sign Finley, or any other tight end, in the near future. As we've mentioned several times, the front office and coaching staff do not share what seems to be widespread fan concern regarding the tight end position. The Giants will enter training camp with five on the roster, including the returning Adrien Robinson and Larry Donnell, veteran acquisitions Kellen Davis and Daniel Fells and rookie free agent Xavier Grimble. Each had his moments in the spring and the Giants will give them a chance to show what they can do in camp and the preseason. If no one steps forward, that might change the equation, but the Giants believe the tight end solution is already on the roster.
