Five things we learned from team practice

**

1)** Heading into Monday, two practices and a game remained for players trying to make the 53-man roster, which will be decided by 6 p.m. ET this Saturday. Now there is only one and the preseason finale in New England on Thursday. "That's where we are," head coach Tom Coughlin said after practice about the message to his players. "If you're going to make a move, if you're going to show something, someone who is looking to make our team that hasn't made it before, I'd say that you need to get about the business of doing it. It's time. There's not a lot of time, but what opportunity you get to step on the field Thursday night, I'm hoping for your benefit that it's a good one."

2) The Giants were taking a good look at Larry Donnell today. The tight end proved his mettle a little over a week ago when he overcame what was feared to be a bad knee injury leading up to the Colts game. He managed to suit up and play two days later, earning the respect of his coaches and teammates. There is depth ahead of him at the position, but he was used a lot with quarterback David Carr today and hauled in a few passes. Two nights ago, Donnell was targeted six times against the Jets, catching two passes for 18 yards with a long of 15. On the topic of tight ends, Adrien Robinson also hauled in a nifty catch over the middle from Ryan Nassib in practice.

3) What was said about Donnell could also be applied to Michael Cox today, especially in the kickoff return game. The rookie has caught the eye of Coughlin as he notched three impressive returns for an average of 26.3 yards against the Jets. He was one or two misses away from breaking two of them, including the long of 35 yards. Coughlin was paying close attention to him today and could be heard yelling "hit it" on his returns at practice. Cox is providing options for the Giants with David Wilson taking on a larger role in the offense.

4) Coming off a big game against the Jets, Mark Herzlich isn't going to make the Giants' decision at starting middle linebacker easy. He made a nice play in practice today by breaking up a would-be touchdown to Bear Pascoe in the front corner of the end zone. With Dan Connor starting, Herzlich led the Giants with nine tackles (six solo) against the Jets, in addition to a sack, a tackle for loss, and a pass breakup.

5) Before Justin Tuck ended practice with what would have been a sack, Prince Amukamara and Antrel Rolle provided the top highlight of the day. Rolle tipped up David Carr's pass, which Amukamara snagged with one hand going the opposite way. Stay tuned to Giants.com for the video highlight.
