EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Giants' training camp practice tour, which includes previously announced visits to Cleveland and New England, will also stop Saturday evening in Newark.

Second-year coach Joe Judge wanted a camp event geared toward the local community and found an outlet in the NFL initiative called "Back Together Saturday." The Giants will practice in the newly-renovated 4,500-seat Eddie Moraes Stadium – formerly Ironbound Stadium – which is reopening after being closed by the federal government in 1987. After that long hiatus, the stadium, which frequently hosted local and international soccer games, will again be the home of the East Side High School football program.

The Giants' visit to Newark is not an event open to the general public. High school football teams from Newark and surrounding communities, plus nearby Pop Warner and other youth programs, will attend the workout. Attendance is expected to number approximately 2,000 people.

Judge and a few players will address the students.

The Giants partnered with the office of Mayor Ras J. Baraka and the Newark Board of Education to plan the event, inviting area youth and high school football teams and other community programs to attend the "Back Together Saturday" community event.

The Giants have enjoyed a great relationship with the Newark football community and recently provided $10,000 equipment grants to all six of the city's public high school football teams. They have also hosted annual programs in partnership with the Newark Bronze Shields (the African American police officer's association within the Newark Police Department) for Newark's high school football teams to discuss topics including creating healthy relationships, goal setting and preparing for college.

Eddie Moraes Stadium is one of six football fields in Newark that have been rehabbed through the LISC NFL Grassroots Program. The other five are:

  • Andre Tippet Field, Branch Brook Park, Newark, NJ
  • Nat Turner Park, Central Ward, Newark, NJ
  • Westside Park, Newark, NJ
  • Jesse Allen Park, Newark, NJ
  • Newark Collegiate Academy, Newark, NJ
  • The Ironbound Community Corporation secured a $250,000 grant from the NFL for the refurbishment of Eddie Moraes Stadium.

The new stadium will be a multi-purpose sports facility, which is expected to host its first high school football game in the fall. It was renamed last year in memory of Eddie Moraes, an Ironbound resident who was a prominent soccer player and administrator across the county for 50 years.

The Giants are again holding their training camp at the Quest Diagnostics Center, their headquarters in East Rutherford. They will hold joint practices with the Cleveland Browns in Ohio on August 19 and 20 (before the teams meet in a preseason game in Cleveland on August 22) and with the Patriots in Foxboro on August 25 and 26 (prior to the teams' preseason game in MetLife Stadium on the 29th).
