Giants sign CB Colton Hood to rookie contract

HOOD-SIGNING-INVISALIGN

The New York Giants have signed cornerback Colton Hood to his rookie contract.

Hood, the team's second-round pick (No. 37 overall), joins wide receiver Malachi Fields (No. 74 overall), defensive lineman Bobby Jamison-Travis (No. 186), offensive lineman J.C. Davis (No. 192) and linebacker Jack Kelly (No. 193) as the members of the draft class that have signed their rookie deals.

The 5-foot-11, 193-pound corner had the highlight of rookie minicamp this past weekend as he made a play on the ball during two-minute drill, taking it the other way for a touchdown. While it was only one practice, Hood seemed to already make a strong impression on his head coach.

"Hood, loved him in press," Harbaugh told the media Saturday. "He was at press corner. He was playing press out there with the other corners. He looked really good. You saw him make a couple of plays. How about the interception in two minute? That was a nice play. He was good. He was good and diligent the whole time."

Hood played in 29 career games in college – four at Auburn, 13 at Colorado, and the final 12 at Tennessee. Across those three seasons, the corner totaled 77 tackles, including 5.5 tackles for loss, three interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown, 14 pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery for a touchdown.

He had his best campaign with the Volunteers last season. Hood started all 12 regular season games and finished with 50 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery for a touchdown, one interception for a touchdown, and eight pass breakups. The 21-year-old was on the field for 451 coverage snaps and was credited with allowing 28 receptions for 318 yards and just one touchdown, earning him a passer rating against of 70.8.

Hood became the first player in the SEC with an interception return and a fumble return for a touchdown in the same season since 2019. This played a role in Hood earning second-team All-SEC honors from the Associated Press, in addition to being named a semifinalist for the Thorpe Award, given to the nation's top defensive back.

The young corner put together an impressive performance in Indianapolis at this year's NFL Combine. Hood ran a 4.44 40-yard dash with a 1.58 10-yard split, in addition to registering a 40.5" vertical jump and 10'5" broad jump, all of which led to him earning an 84 Athleticism Score from Next Gen Stats, which ranked third among cornerbacks at this year's combine.
