*Giants.com brings you an instant postgame recap of Sunday's game: *
AT A GLANCE
Eli Manning said early in the week that he wanted to end the season on a positive note, and that's just what the Giants did on Sunday, defeating the Washington Redskins 18-10 at MetLife Stadium.
It was the team's first win under interim head coach Steve Spagnuolo.Â
The Giants, who finished with three wins and a franchise-high 13 losses, enter an offseason that will include a new general manager, new head coach, and the second pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
The first vacancy was filled this past week when Dave Gettleman took over as G.M. On his first full day on the job, he began revamping the franchise's football operations by dismissing Marc Ross, the vice president of player evaluation.
WHAT WE LEARNED ON OFFENSE
*A day before the game, the Giants promoted three players off the practice squad -- offensive linemen Adam Bisnowaty and Nick Becton, and tight end Ryan O'Malley. The Giants had an opening on their roster due to the suspension of cornerback Eli Apple. They created two more by waiving/injured right tackle Bobby Hart and placing wide receiver Tavarres King on injured reserve.
*Tight end Evan Engram (rib) and wide receiver Sterling Shepard (neck), the Giants' top two receivers, were ruled out on Friday because of injuries. Additionally, left tackle Ereck Flowers was inactive on game day after dealing with a groin injury.
*From left to right, the Giants' starting offensive line was Adam Bisnowaty (first career game), John Jerry, Brett Jones, Jon Halapio, and Chad Wheeler. Jerry suffered a concussion and John Greco replaced him midway through the first quarter.
*On the second play of the game, running back Orleans Darkwa broke a 77-yard touchdown run, the Giants' longest carry since Ahmad Bradshaw had a 77-yarder at Giants Stadium on Nov. 16, 2008 in a win over the Ravens. The Giants rushed for 260 yards, including a career-high 154 from Darkwa. Â
*Rookie Davis Webb suited up for the first time this season, serving as the No. 2 quarterback behind Eli Manning. Geno Smith, who had been the backup for most of the season, was inactive.
WHAT WE LEARNED ON DEFENSE
*Following Darkwa's big play to start the game, linebacker Kelvin Sheppard intercepted Kirk Cousins on the Redskins' ensuing possession. He returned his first career pick 12 yards down to the Redskins 18. Safety Andrew Adams was credited with a quarterback hit on the play. The Giants quickly turned it into six points on Manning's touchdown pass to Sharp. Sheppard intercepted Cousins again that sealed the game with under three minutes left.
*Making his eighth start of the season in a depleted secondary, cornerback Ross Cockrell grabbed another interception off Kirk Cousins early in the second half. Last week, he picked off Arizona's Drew Stanton twice at University of Phoenix Stadium. Cockrell, a former Steeler, was traded to the Giants eight days before the start of the season.
*Defensive end Olivier Vernon has now recorded at least one sack in three consecutive games. He accounted for half of the Giants' three sacks on Sunday. Linebacker Devon Kennard had one, and defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul split another.
WHAT WE LEARNED ON SPECIAL TEAMS
*The Giants continued to struggle with protecting their kicks. Aldrick Rosas had an extra point blocked following the first touchdown of the game. He now has three failed extra points and seven missed field goal attempts. However, he made both of his field goal attempts on Sunday from 23 and 29 yards.
*The punt team also allowed a 29-yard return from Jamison Crowder in the closing seconds of the first half, setting up a 49-yard field goal by Dustin Hopkins as time expired to cut Washington's deficit to 15-10 heading into the locker room. Brad Wing had one of his nine punts on the afternoon downed inside the 20.
